  2. Scope • The purpose of this evaluation process is to provide a rated evaluation system for determining proper placement of student athletes fairly based on their performance. • The evaluation is broken down into three main categories to evaluate each player on her ability hit, throw, and catch.

  3. Evaluation Breakdown • Hitting: • Each player will be observed and evaluated by a coach. • The coach will be evaluating the player’s ability to do the following: • Pitch selection : whether the pitch is a strike or not and to swing or not swing. • Form and Body Mechanics: The player’s ability to utilize their body correctly to hit a ball • Throwing: • Each player will be observed and evaluated by a coach. • The coach will be evaluating the players ability to do the following: • Properly throw a ball. • Reach a static target accurately. • Players will be evaluated on a short distance (less than 60’) and a long distance throw (greater than 60’). • Catching: • Each player will be observed and evaluated by a coach. • The coach will be evaluating the players ability to do the following: • Properly prepare to receive a groundball, line drive, and pop fly. • Execute catching ball properly.

  4. Execution of Evaluation • On the specified day(s) of practice various stations will be set up to test each player on the identified skills. • Players will be broken down into small groups. • Players will report to each station and execute the defined drill or task as directed by the coach. • The coach will observe the activity of the player for the specified duration and provide a summary rating for the category they are observing. • After completing the task the player will wait until the group has completed the station/task. The coach will then escort the players (while retaining the evaluation forms as to prevent tampering or communicating evaluation status) to the next station. • The coach will pass off the evaluation forms to the next coach.

  5. Stations / Tasks • Hitting: Conducted in the batting cage in the LHS gym • The player will receive 6 balls pitched from a pitching machine. • The player will be responsible for determining if the pitch is a strike or a ball • The player will be responsible for deciding to swing or not swing. • The player will be evaluated on if they chose to swing or not swing on a ball that was or was not a strike from the coaches perspective. • Additionally the coach will evaluate the following aspects of the player while batting: • Stance and Form • Pre-swing: load (and unload as the pitch is released) • Eye on the ball • Swing/ body mechanics • Contact (if contact should be made) • Follow through • The player will receive 2 balls pitched from a pitching machine. • The player will be responsible for executing a proper bunt • The player will be evaluated on proper setup and correctly contacting the ball.

  6. Stations / Tasks (cont.) • Throwing: Evaluated at two distances, less than 60’ and greater than 60’. • Players will first be evaluated on a short distance throw on a static target. • Player will be given (handed) 3 balls. • Players will then be given the opportunity to throw each ball at a static target ( stacked set of buckets). • Players will be evaluated on the ability to “hit” the target • Players will be evaluated on the amount of power in their throw. • Players will then be evaluated on long distance throwing at a static target. • Player will be given (handed) 3 balls. • Players will then be given the opportunity to throw each ball at a static target ( stacked set of buckets). • Players will be evaluated on the ability to “hit” the target • Players will be evaluated on the amount of power in their throw. • Additionally the coach will evaluate the following aspects of the player while throwing: • Stance and Form • Throw/ body mechanics • Power • Follow through • Accuracy
