  2. Motivation Domestic Global • Increasing demands for Wireless internet access • For preparing Ubiquitous Network in the future • ISM band(2.4 & 5.8GHz) WLAN used • U.S : UNII, Europe : HiperLAN • 5GHz band allocation for global usage WRC-2003 resolve5GHz Band for RLAN to Globally Harmonize Public WLAN Enhance Home Network Application Cellular Interworking Numerous application possible High efficiency data transmission Real time service provide Various core network support Spectrum efficiency upgrade (DFS, TPC) J.W Lim

  3. 5GHz WLAN Service Position 2.4GHz band WLAN 2.3GHz Band Wibro 5GHz Band WLAN Vehicle Normedic 2G cellular 802.11b EV-DO/ WCDMA - 802.11a - HyperLAN 802.16a BWA Standing ADSL VDSL FTTH 0.1 1 10 100 1000(Mbps) J.W Lim

  4. Application : Public WLAN Service Anywhere Airport Home Hotel WLAN Office Sub/Rail Station Anytime Public Area J.W Lim

  5. Public WLAN Service Issue • Public Wireless Access Service by Using Wireless LAN • WLAN service provider installs WLAN AP in hot-spots, and provides wireless access service to • Users who have NICs (Network Interface Cards) and wireless terminals (Notebook PC, PDA, etc) • Through subscription, authentication, and charging • Limited Service Coverage of WLAN AP • About 100m for Indoor and 300m for Outdoor • Technologies • IEEE 802.11b now  IEEE 802.11g+a, IEEE 802.11n in the future • Low cost broadband and WLAN productivity • High speed data and mobile coverage J.W Lim

  6. Public WLAN Service Issue • Regulation Aspect • Commercial service using ISM band • Authentication and Privacy • Provide secure wireless communication to users • Enable service providers to exclude illicit users • Network Planning for AP Installation • No experience for the massive installation of WLAN APs • Limited channels (three non-overlapped channels) • RF Interference Issues • Interference between WLAN and other ISM devices • Interference between WLAN channels J.W Lim

  7. 2003 2004 • Hot spots: 12,000 • Revenue: $20M • subscribers: 310,000 • Hot spots: over 20,000 • Revenue: $200M • Subscribers: 1,160,000 Example : KT Public WLAN Service • Hot spots coverage • 13,000 sites available now in Korea (~20% world wide) • About 20,000 Hot Spots accessible by the end of 2004 • Public Wireless LAN Service Market just begins to bloom • KT places great stress on NESPOT J.W Lim

  8. Application : Home Network • In order to transmit HD image data(>20Mbps) IEEE802.11a(5GHz bands) technology is needed • For realizing URC(Ubiquitous Robotic Companion) 5GHz bands is more important to deploy IT infrastructure. example : Samsung’s Home gateway J.W Lim

  9. Allow access to wireless high-speed Internet and mobile communications with a single terminal The Synergy Effect of Public WLAN and EVDO’s Wide Coverage Broadband, Low Fee (WLAN) & Wide Coverage (CDMA) 2.3GHz WiBro PCS/IMT-2000 기지국 기지국 Application : Celluer/WLAN Convergence Internet PSTN Total/Convergence DMB High speed/Data Interworking Low speed/Data WLAN CDMA 1x, EV-DO HotSpot (2.4/5GHz) WLAN Office(5GHz) BTS BTS AP AP BTS BTS Home(2.4/5GHz) Interwork J.W Lim

  10. 5GHz Spectrum Policy • 5GHz band (380MHz wide) will be considered to WLAN (2004) : On processing • Wide bandwidth and high-power transmission in outdoor will expand the coverage and ensure higher transmission quality Hiperlan 5.15~5.35 Hiperlan 5.470~5.725 ISM Unlicensed 455 MHz Europe U-NII 5.15~5.35 U-NII 5.725~5.825 Unlicensed 555 MHz US FWA Unlicensed 100 MHz Japan WLAN(indoor) 5.15~5.25 WLAN(outdoor) 5.470~5.650 WLAN(outdoor) 5.25~5.35 ISM WLAN WLAN WLAN Outdoor Unlicensed 480 MHz Korea 5400 5100 5200 5300 5600 5500 5700 5800 5900 J.W Lim
