  2. Not just for winky faces ;)

  3. Holes Summary Activity With your table partner, read through the summary. Underline sentences you find that use semicolons. Discuss with your partner what you think the function or purpose of the semicolon is based on what you underlined. After you have some ideas, write down what you think is the purpose(s) of semicolons. Be prepared to share!

  4. What do youthink?

  5. When we use semicolons To show a close link between two sentences • Indicates to the reader that there is a relationship between two independent clauses. • Examples • It was below zero; Kyle wondered if he would freeze to death. • These are two related ideas. • I crossed the finish line first; she crossed the line second. • The second clause begins with a lowercase letter Information taken from Jeff Anderson’s Mechanically Inclined, and Mignon Fogarty’s Grammar Girl Presents The Ultimate Writing Guide for Students

  6. Wrong Examples • It was below zero; Kyle had salad for dinner. • These two ideas are not related. • I listened to the radio all the way home; My favorite song was never played. • The first word of the second independent clause should begin with a lowercase letter.

  7. When we use semicolons To separate items in a list that already contains commas • Semicolons can help clear up confusion! • Examples • I have visited Seattle, Washington; Los Angeles, California; and New York, New York. • Gina, a red-haired girl; Alyssa, a blonde; and Stephanie, a brunette, all wanted to dye their hair different colors.* • You still need to include “and” before the last item in your list. *Example taken from Aboyne Academy Information taken from Jeff Anderson’s Mechanically Inclined, and Mignon Fogarty’s Grammar Girl Presents The Ultimate Writing Guide for Students

  8. Which of the following is correct? I went to Starbucks, Pita Pit, and Noodles & Co.; she went to Chipotle, Grand Traverse Pie, and Tropical Smoothie; he went to B-Dubs, Cosi, and Biggby. Molly loves puppies; not kittens. John was tired; he didn’t feel like going for a run. My iPhone is broken; The screen cracked.
