  1. Paleontologists

  2. Purpose of Fossil Record • Organisms have features that show details about their lifetime • Fossils are the only thing we have to find out about our past • Sometimes we can tell organisms age by their fossil record • Over time, history, behaviors, features and these animal functions changed

  3. More Purposes for Fossil Record • Fossils help us to learn about the changes in their features and functions over time • Paleontologists and geologists before Darwin used the sequence of fossils in rocks used it as not as proof of biological evolution, but as a basis for working out the original sequence of rock strata that had been structurally.

  4. Support for Biological Evolution • The bite mark of a mosasaur, a type of predatory marine reptile that lived at the same time as the ammonite. The bite mark showed a relationship between the two. • Fossils also show growth through time -a cross-section through a sub-adult thigh bone of the duckbill dinosaur Maiasaura. The white spaces show that there were lots of blood vessels running through the bone, which indicates that it was a fast-growing bone.

  5. More Support for Biological Evolution • Fossils can determine lifestyles of species -By comparing the fossil trilobite to animals like pill bugs, paleontologists can infer that trilobites rolled up for protection from predators • Annual wood rings are formed as a tree trunk grows. By counting the number of rings (one per year), we can guess how many years the tree • Some fossils give us information about how adults took care of their young.
