Disability & Dyslexia ServiceBackground • All Scottish institutions participate in the National Network of Disability Coordinators and have Disability Services • Institutions provide assistive software either on their network or on specific workstations • Most institutions assess students for Disabled Students Allowance

  3. Disability & Dyslexia Service • Around 1000 students • Approximately 400 with specific learning difficulties • Full range of impairments • Extensive experience and wide range of contacts in Scotland and nationally

  5. Disability and Dyslexia ServiceDisability Advisers • Assigned to specific schools • Initial contact with applicants/ enquirers/teachers • Casework • Work with Schools/Departments on support arrangements • Support in arranging examination and on-course support

  6. Disability and Dyslexia Service Support for SpLD’s • Screening for dyslexia/specific learning differences • Educational Psychologist for assessment • Workshops – Writing/Study Skills/Time Management • Individual appointments

  7. Disability and Dyslexia Service Enabling Technology Support • Tutors students in Enabling Technology • University remit to support accessibility • Workshops/individual appointments • Equipment loan pool - specialist equipment • Networked software for literacy support, concept mapping and magnification

  8. Disability & Dyslexia ServiceAssessment • Disabled Students Allowance • Study related additional costs • Equipment • NMPH – note takers etc. • In-house Study Skills and Technology Assessment • Referral for Study Skills/Technology training

Disability and Dyslexia ServiceChallenges • Increasing number and complexity of students needs • More specific diagnoses –Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia. • Increase in numbers of students with Autistic Spectrum Disorders and ADD • Increased numbers of students with Mental Health issues
