  1. Presents Fall Forum 2002

  2. Standards update: Multimedia systems and terminals (Q.1/16) Presented by Patrick Luthi TANDBERG Rapporteur for ITU-T Question 1/16

  3. Q.1/16: Multimedia systems, terminals and data-conferencing • Results from the last meeting of Study Group 16 (Oct. 15-25) • Enhancements to multimedia security (H.233, H.234) • Requirements for signalling of H.264 in H.320 and H.324 systems • Ability to transport multiple streams in H.320 systems IMTC Fall Forum – November 2002 – New York, NY, USA

  4. Multimedia security: revised H.233 • H.233 – Confidentiality system for audiovisual services • Correction and clarification of inconsistencies • H.233 had not been revised since 1995! • New encryption algorithms • TDEA - Triple Data Encryption Algorithm (a.k.a Triple DES) • AES - Advanced Encryption Standard • New algorithm identifiers: 0000 0011 for TDEA 0000 1000 for AES IMTC Fall Forum – November 2002 – New York, NY, USA

  5. H.233: algorithm capabilities (P8) • New parameter identifiers • TDEA • AES • Example: AES, OFB-128, with a key of 128 bits • {[11000000][00000011][00000000][00001000][00000001]} IMTC Fall Forum – November 2002 – New York, NY, USA

  6. Multimedia security: revised H.234 • H.234 - Encryption key management and authentication system for audiovisual services • Removal of ambiguities related to the session exchange of asymmetric length of keys • H.233 allows both symmetric and asymmetric exchanges • Removal of references to MLP encryption according to T.120 • This effort is for further study IMTC Fall Forum – November 2002 – New York, NY, USA

  7. H.264 signalling requirements • New video codec: H.264 | 14496-10 “Advanced Video Coding” (ISO/IEC) • To be up for Consent in February 2003 • This means that H.320, H.323, and H.324 need to be updated to support the usage of H.264 • H.320: new Annex on usage of H.264; new capabilities and BAS commands in H.230/H.242 • H.323 and H.324: new capabilities and commands in H.245 • Target for finalization is May 2003 IMTC Fall Forum – November 2002 – New York, NY, USA

  8. Identified H.264 requirements • For H.320 systems, the H.264 bitstream will be carried using same BCH forward error correction code as for H.261 and H.263 • For H.323 and H.324, the bitstream will be carried using an IETF RTP payload packetization • Capabilities: based on profiles and levels described in Annex A/H.264 • Commands: RequestH264Mode cancelRequestH264Mode IMTC Fall Forum – November 2002 – New York, NY, USA

  9. Multiple streams in H.320 • Initial effort is to allow the transport of 2 separate video streams • Contributions to progress this work are coming in • Many vendors have already proprietary mechanisms to achieve this • There is a need for standardization to allow cross-products interoperability • Will take the form of a new annex to H.320 • Target for finalization is May 2003 IMTC Fall Forum – November 2002 – New York, NY, USA

  10. Conclusion • H.320 is still going strong • There is a need to continue to keep the standard and interop testing up to date • The whole world hasn’t gone IP yet! Thank you! IMTC Fall Forum – November 2002 – New York, NY, USA
