    10. Continued Professional Development (CPD) is now mandatory for all qualified pharmacists and the BPSA are proud to offer its own scheme. The PDC scheme was developed several years ago as a form of CPD for undergraduates and preregistration trainees. The PDC scheme is intended to help members demonstrate their professional commitment to lifelong learning to future employers and looks impressive on the CV. The PDC scheme is accredited by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and is well recognised by employers and the profession. The aim of the PDC is to reward those members who put extra effort into developing their pharmacy and professional knowledge outside lectures. It sets BPSA members apart from the rest.Continued Professional Development (CPD) is now mandatory for all qualified pharmacists and the BPSA are proud to offer its own scheme. 12. Automatic membership when you sign up to the BPSA EPSA represents over 120,000 pharmacy students in 32 European countries. The objectives of EPSA are ‘To develop the interests and opinions of European Pharmacy Students’ and to encourage contact and co-operation between them.’ The EPSA Annual Congress is the biggest and most exciting event in the EPSA calendar. This is a chance for delegates from all the Members Organisations to come together to refuel their spirits and enthusiasm for the coming year. EPSA also run a summer university, which was created to promote the relationship between pharmacy and medical students regarding the best approach and benefit to patient health. It involves a social program along with an educational element. There is also the EPSA Autumn Assembly, which provides an opportunity for EPSA members to review what has been done during the first half of the year. In addition to all these events, there is the Individual Mobility Project which involves doing a paid placement abroad in Europe for 3-6 months. This is mainly aimed at preregistration students and newly qualified pharmacists. More information can be obtained by contacting the BPSA European Officer at europeanofficer@bpsa.co.uk or visit www.epsa-online.org. In 1949 the BPSA collaborated with the student bodies of seven other countries to form an international pharmacy student’s movement and the IPSF was born. The IPSF now represents approximately 300,000 students from over 60 countries. IPSF has an Annual Congress, which is a 10-day mix of debating, workshops, sun bathing, souvenir buying and international relationship building in a different country each year. Previous congresses have taken place in Egypt, El Salvador, Canada and Taiwan. Other events include the Scientific Symposium, the IPSF Twinning Scheme, the IPSF book appeal and the Neema Project. 13. STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMME The programme is run by the BPSA Student Exchange Officer and offers British pharmacy students the opportunity to work abroad in over 50 different countries including Australia, Canada, Egypt, Peru and Thailand. This is a fabulous opportunity to see the world and gain international pharmacy experience. There are two types of exchange: the general exchange and the bilateral exchange. To participate in the bilateral exchange members need to organise a placement and accommodation for a student in their home country and this greatly increases the chances of being placed abroad. In the general exchange members compete with others for the chance to work abroad.STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMME The programme is run by the BPSA Student Exchange Officer and offers British pharmacy students the opportunity to work abroad in over 50 different countries including Australia, Canada, Egypt, Peru and Thailand. 16. One of the BPSA biggest selling points is the Pre-registration services we provide. As you may or may not realise: Once you finish your degree; organising, learning and passing the pre-registration year is completely off your own back. University and your pharmacy school no longer provides support, but we do. The PDA sponsor two conferences and help to produce 3 magazines dedicated to preregs. We also have a graduate officer, Laura who answers any queries that preregs have. Undergraduate students may also contact her if you have any questions about applying for your prereg. 17. BPSA is the official student branch of the RPS and we encourage and facilitate the interchange of ideas and opinions between students and the Society. We regularly liaise with the RPS officials and senior members of staff to put forward our member’s feelings about pharmacy. We attend various events in the pharmacy calendar to put forward students’ views and ideas and also learn about developments at the Society. These events include: RPS/ BPSA liaison meetings RPS research projects: Pharmacy education & Career choices RPS Education Committee meetings As the official student organisation of the Society we can take our decisions and motions to the RPS liaison meetings to keep student issues at the forefront of the pharmacy agenda. We also work closely with other organisations such as EPSA and IPSF to improve awareness of BPSA. As an Association BPSA also writes articles for journals such as the PJ, C&D and the Tomorrows Pharmacist, in order to highlight issues concerning pharmacy students. The BPSA organise many events throughout the year so there’s something for everyone to enjoy! 18. Each area will hold two Area Conferences per academic year; usually at autumn and spring. All area events are open to all BPSA members. The area events are organised by an Area Co-ordinator (A/C) and are usually a one day event. The topics of the conferences are specialised and offer the opportunity to participate and learn about a subject relevant not only to the degree but also to the future career. Past topics have included substance abuse, coronary heart disease, nutrition and alternative medicine. The conferences include informative talks from guest speakers who are experts in their fields, workshops and active discussions. There are also optional social events after the conferences, and Area Conferences are an excellent way to meet students from other schools of pharmacy. The Science into Practice conference is a one day national event which focuses on how you use the science that you learn in your degree in real life. Past speakers include the MHRA, GSK and AZ. It is open to all BPSA members, and during the conference members debate major issues that affect students and the profession. If passed, these issues become BPSA policy. Each day at conference is packed with talks, debates and workshops for members to enjoy. One of the highlights of the week is the Question and Answer panel where members have the opportunity to question some of the leading figures of the pharmacy world. The panel consists of representatives from various sectors of the pharmacy profession. The evenings are all organised from themed parties and a charity pub-crawl, to receptions hosted by organisations including the RPS and the NPA. The week ends with the election of the officers for the following year and the BPSA Annual Ball, a prestigious black tie event.
