  3. Quality of Program • Accreditation, e.g., • APA (American Psych Association: Ph.D/Psy.D only) • NASP (National Assoc. of School Psychologists) • CACREP (Council for Counseling & Related Ed Programs) • COAMFTE (Commission on Accreditation for Marriage & Family Education) • Other…..

  4. Quality cont. • How long has the program been around? • Who are the faculty? Regular? Adjunct? • Can you talk to current/recent students? • What are the admissions requirements—how stringent? • How competitive is admission? • Emphasis on Evidence-Based Practice

Common Applied Psychology Fields • School Psychology  • Counseling: Community, College Student Affairs, School Counseling, Chemical Dependency, Rehabilitation Counseling • Clinical: adult, child, specializations • Forensic • Marriage & Family (often in other depts.) • Industrial/Organizational • Applied Behavior Analysis

  6. Experimental/Academic Fields • Any of the disciplines within psychology • Common degrees: M.S. or Ph.D. in Social, Learning, Personality, Cognition, Experimental, Biopsych, etc. • Master’s in General Psych • Master’s in Experimental • Master’s in disciplinary areas

Terminal vs. Non-Terminal degrees • Terminal: “self-contained”; the intent is to stop with that degree • Non-terminal: A Master’s that’s intended to be part of a more advanced degree • Some Master’s can be either terminal or a stepping stone to a more advanced degree (e.g., NDSU Clinical Master’s degree)
