  1. Man’s Sixth Sense (Sensor Controls for an Automated Car) By Matthew Elias Husson I

  2. Outline • Senior Design Overview • Ultrasonic Sensors • Cameras • Camera Lighting Control • Conclusion • Questions

  3. Overview • Project might be incorporated into Senior Design (Automated Car that uses cameras to detect obstacles) • Importance of the car – Reduces the number of accidents that are caused by humans (especially women) • Major companies are just beginning to implement these types of control systems • Block Diagram

  4. Overall Block Diagram

  5. Ultrasonic Sensors • Send out a sound wave • Receiver waits for sound wave deflection • Cylindrical objects – shorter detection distance

  6. Cameras • Take Pictures • Filter out colors • Triangulate two pictures for distance measurement • Attempt to avoid glare problems

  7. Purpose of the Lighting Control • Picture Consistency • No blacked out or too bright images • Possible Glare Reduction

  8. Theory • The shutter speed determines how much light enters the lens • If the time increases more light hits sensor • If the time decreases less light hits the sensor

  9. Lighting Control Diagram

  10. Graphs

  11. Conclusion • Cameras today do not implement this type of control system. • Therefore, Not sure if it is possible to implement. • The car that we are designing might implement this design, but it might not. • Definitely is better for multiple shot cameras.
