  1. 12.1 Indus Valley Civilization

  2. The Indian Subcontinent • One of the regions of Asia is South Asia • Shaped like a triangle into the Indian Ocean • Today it includes many countries • It is still considered the subcontinent of India • A large landmass separate from the rest of the continent • It is divided from the rest of Asia by mountains • Himalayas • Hindu Kush • 2000 miles from N to S • Almost as wide

  3. The Indian Subcontinent • River Systems • The Indus River flows across the northwest • It includes all the rivers that drain into it • Starts in the Himalaya Mountains where it fills with melting ice and snow • The 1st civ. Developed in this valley • Dry most of the year • Floods left behind silt making rich soil • This allowed for surplus • The Ganges River flows in the northeast • Floods also make it good for farming and another civilization began there

  4. The Indian Subcontinent • Climate • Tropical • Monsoons • Winter – dry winds blow from the land to the sea • Summer – wet winds bring rain from the ocean and cooler temperatures • Most of India depends on the rains • On time plenty of food • Late or not at all = drought and many may die

  5. Indus Valley Mysteries • Many artifacts and buildings have been found in the Indus River Valley • But we have a lot to learn about the people who lived there • And where they went

  6. Indus Valley Mysteries • Government and Religion • They were well organized people • Common weights and measures • Straight streets • Large raised citadel • Sewers • Not sure which type of government • No temples • No evidence of priests • No known religion, but some evidence ties it to Hinduism

  7. Indus Valley Mysteries • Writing • Scholars have not deciphered their writing yet • Not enough of each symbol have been found not

  8. Indus Valley Mysteries • Disappearance • No one knows why • Maybe • Stagnant water led to mosquitoes = disease • Deforestation = not enough fuel, or building materials, more severe floods • Over grazing by cattle = smaller herds = people starving • Climate change • Indus river altered course
