Nationalism Grips Europe and Asia • Failures of the World War I Peace Settlement • Treaty of Versailles causes anger in Europe • Germany resentful • Blame for war (War guilt Clause) • Loss of territory • Russia resents loss of land • New democracies struggle • Social, Economic problems • Dictators rise-Totalitarian Governments • Driven by nationalism • Desire for territory

Nationalism In Europe and Asia • 1922 Vladimir Lenin establishes Soviet Union • 1924 Joseph Stalin takes over: • Collectivized Farms • Creates second largest industrial power • Famines kill millions • Purges anyone who threatens his power • 8-13 million killed • Totalitarian government • Total Control
