Welcome to 9th Grade AVID Assignments Due: FINAL Shield Essay DUE TODAY, August 11th Monday Aug 4, 2014 Today’s Agenda: Warm-up Turn in Shield Essay Project Write Questions and Summary for Mr. Rother’s presentation Thank you letters to Mr. Rother Essential Question: What skills do I need to be successful in college? Objective: I will draft a letter of appreciation to guest speakers.

  4. Cornell Notes • A – apply your thinking • Get out your Cornell Notes on Mr. Rother’s presentation • Use your notes to write your Questions on the left side of your paper. There should be one question for each idea you took notes about • R – Reflect on learning • Write your summary • Add a summary to your notes. Answer the essential question as your topic sentence and turn each “chunk” of information into supporting sentences

  5. Personal Letter Format Date Dear Mr. Rother, Paragraph 1 – Introduction – who you are, why you are in AVID Paragraph 2 – what you learned from his presentation – give specific details Paragraph 3 – give thanks and share how you plan to apply what you learned Closing, Signature

Tuesday Aug 12, 2014 Today’s Agenda: Warm-up Binders Portfolios Essential Question: How do I stay organized? Objective: I will refine organization and neatness of a binder through ongoing course support, peer discussion, personal reflection, and goal setting

  9. Binders • Replace the old Binder Grade form with a new one and fill in the top together • Go over the form and get a pre-binder check checklist • Get a AVID class table of contents form • Make sure you have everything that should be in the AVID section of your binder

  10. Portfolios • Pass out papers to go in sheet protectors

  12. Warm-Up Write down 2 things that you learned about yourself through the process of creating the life shield and writing the shield essay

Welcome to 9th Grade AVID Assignments Due: AVID Student information Sheet WITH photo – DUE FRIDAY – AUG. 15 Binder check WITH Mentor DUE NEXT FRIDAY, AUG. 22 Thursday Aug 14, 2014 Today’s Agenda: Warm-up Portfolios Discuss/review binders Goal Setting Activity Take Cornell Notes as you watch an AVID tutorial video Essential Question: How do I actively participate in a tutorial? Objective: I will understand the steps of the tutorial process.

  14. Portfolios • Get your portfolio and sheet protectors out • You will be given pages to put in your Portfolio sheet protectors

  15. Binder Checks • Missing forms • Binder checks will be done with your mentor next week and must be completed by NEXT Friday, August 22nd • Friday – I will check FOR A GRADE, your student info sheet WITH A PHOTO ATTACHED!!! You will get your Mentor teacher’s name

  16. Goals • I need 5 volunteers • Bring a piece of paper, and pen or pencil, and your binder or something to write on • Write down your observations; what you notice

  17. Goals • At your tables, share what you wrote down about what you noticed about how well the students were able to reach the garbage can.

  18. Goals • How does that exercise relate to race car driving or tilling a field or rowing a boat to a distant island?

  19. Goals • Short term – less than 6 months • Mid-term – 1to 2 years • Long-term – 3-5 years

  20. Goals • On your same scratch paper from before, brainstorm… • 2 or 3 short term • 2 or 3 mid-term, AND • 2 or 3 long-term ACADEMIC goals

  22. College Road Map • One of your AVID long-term goals is to attend a four year university • Goal and plan is already filled out • Fill in at LEAST 6 Action Steps to follow your plan and achieve your goal
