Job Description • (specialist dentists) correct irregularities in the way teeth are positioned • they do two different kinds of treatment:-interceptive, done at age 8, to make room in mouth for permanent teeth, can stretch jaw to grow in properly in certain places-full orthodontic treatment, to correct bite and move teeth so they are in proper alignment, done after have all adult teeth • Meet in appointments, examine and diagnose them, use x-rays or photographs • Install braces, worn for 2-3 years, every few weeks need to be tightened • Wear retainer for period of time and schedule regular appointments to check up • Work in clinics, run by themselves or in partnership with other orthodontists • work on patients, supervise staff and take care of duties associated with running a business

Why am I interested? • must have good hand eye coordination and manual dexterity • love working with people and helping them out, patients like me • be patient and gentle, controlled and focused to be able to handle the working on patients • always loved sciences in school and want to continue my education in this subject field • find it fascinating and want to learn more about it from what I have read and through my experience of having braces • Am detailed person who works very hard, great thing for me

Education • have to like school, dedicated to learning, earn top grades through high school and University, long process to get through dentistry and orthodontics programs • In Canada, 1-4 years of an undergraduate program (bachelor’s degree), at least before getting into dental school, competitive • Admission requirements, excellent grades chemistry, biology, physics, and English • must pass Dental Admission Test • dentistry program takes about 4 years to complete • Receive Doctor of Dental Surgery/Dental Medicine degree, depending on school • Once finished dental school, must pass National Dental Examining Board exams before can legally practice dentistry • Most practice for few years before they specialize • Return to complete specialty training in orthodontics, 2-3 years, results in graduate degree and specialists require additional licensing before can practice in field • Pass orthodontics specialty exam administered by Royal College of Dentists of Canada • Five orthodontics programs in Canada, places include University of Manitoba, University of Toronto, Harvard and many in United States

Salary/Future Outlook • During first few years, earn less while develop practice • bills are paid directly by patients or by insurance companies • If have an established practice, generate great deal of money, but half may need to pay for equipment, staff and other overhead costs • If own their own practice, pay for own health/life insurance and retirement benefits • Even after costs taken into account, average annual salaries around $200 000-400 000 • takes several years of practice before get to this skill level though • About 70% of world’s population needs orthodontic treatment, many also want perfect straight teeth • employment outlook dentistry field remain excellent over next while, in demand • competition to be in this field is fierce, have to work hard

Working Conditions • Average works about 40 hour week, but are free to schedule office hours as they like • work indoors in their offices and procedure rooms in cities • Mondays one of the heaviest work days, people coming in with broken appliances from over the weekend • not physically demanding, so no injuries to be worried about • Most of time self-employed, work with staff and work regular business hours during the day year round • also on call so they can be called in to deal with emergencies • work with specialized equipment and use masks and gloves to avoid disease and be presentable and efficient

Related Occupations • Chiropractor: diagnose problems and treat patients by manipulating the spine and other joints with their hands, use different techniques and offer advice on healthy living • Kinesiologist: help people who have suffered injury by designing exercise routines to help improve them • Neurologist: examine patients for problems affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, or muscles • These interest me because they all have to do with science and are in a similar category that I would enjoy doing
