  2. Birth • 1926, March 11in Linden, Alabama • He was the son of a farmer

  3. Early Life • Served in army in world war 2 • After war, he went to Alabama State University • Then’ after college he became a Baptist minister • He became very good friends with Martin Luther King Jr.

  4. Friend to Friend • succeeded him as SCLC president • a week after Martin Luther King Jr. died, Abernathy led a march to support striking sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee • Abernathy resigned in 1977 amid accusations of financial mismanagement, leaving a once substantial and prominent civil rights organization in decline

  5. SADLY, DEATH CAME • He died in Atlanta on April 17, 1990. • Died from Heart Failure
