  1. Assessment and Evaluation, Part III:Assessment Tools Week 10, Tuesday

  2. First Things First • What is due today? • NOTHING! • Was there anything to finish for your “20 Things” assignment? Take this week • My comment about “20 things…” • Fieldwork • BNTHS Friday is coming up on 4/1 (no joke!) – I sent an email a few weeks ago to those who are assigned to that week. If you have questions, please find time to meet with me. • BPS continues until 4/13; Can you report – 3-5 minutes? • BNTHS Erb Class Project: May start up on 3/30, but I still have to hear back from Ms. Erb – if so, she and I will have prepared what you would (briefly) do

  3. The Great Micro-T#2 Opt-Out • So, we need to have an equivalent of Microteaching #2, and I am thinking of a way to allow you to arrange to opt-out of Microteaching #2 • You would agree to be observed while you teach in the field • Slightly stronger standards will be used, but it will be a “natural” setting • It is dependent on my being able to observe you • Strength: it allows you to teach in a setting in which you are working, and reduces the load of teachers on the MT#2 day(s) • Weaknesses: it reduces the amount of feedback you will receive, and will have slightly higher standards (since you are working with real, live students) • Let me know via email ASAP

  4. Discussion #3 • It starts this week • The materials are on Oncourse (Forums) • I am sharing a few items I would prefer that you not circulate (of my own) – please respect that • Follow the directions in Discussion #3 (you may have to click on “Full Description” • I am separating you out by team, to make the discussion be with people with whom you have worked more this semester, and with a smaller group

  5. Poster Presentation:Cooperative Learning

  6. Tools for A&E (Assessment and Evaluation) Not the cable channel

  7. So, this is a tech class… • …And we probably should use technology  • In the last class, we focused on different ways that teachers could assess student learning. • This week, I want us to look at different tools to do this

  8. … But let’s step back again • What (again!) are some of the ways that we can assess student learning? • What are specific ways that you can assess student learning • In your Web Design Course Project? • In your DTP Course Project? • In your individual units?

  9. What is an Assessment tool? • Is there REALLY such a thing as an assessment tool, or is it more of a matter of how we use a tool? • Quick Think-Pair-Share (2 minutes) • What do you think? • Let’s list some on the board that are applicable to CompEd courses (or specifically, the two courses for which you are creating units) • Think-Pair-Share (pairs within teams): Let’s come up with some possible tools, and talk about a specific lesson, skill, or objective in our units where you could use • Start with the obvious ones (tests/quizzes/surveys) • Give general (“survey”) or specific (“Quizlet”) answers • Look for MANY possible options for your lesson/unit (multiple screencast tools, multiple quiz tools

  10. What are we doing?!?! • For those of you who have taken W200, this may seem familiar – creating a list of technology options (“O” in SNOWy) • But I want you to try to find whatever you can that is relevant to your specific unit. • Post the following to your BLOG when finished, and you will share this with the class. What is the goal/objective/skill you are wanting to assess (from your unit)? • What are possible tools that you could use to assess that? • What are the strengths/weaknesses of those tools? • Do you have any other thoughts, concerns, ideas, etc to add about assessing this skill/goal/objective? • Then we will show-and-tell what we found.

  11. What do these tools measure? • What do the different tools on our list measure? • What can these tools NOT measure? • What can’t we measure? • What can’t we measure these things? • What can we do about it?

  12. What about Evaluation Tools? • Can we use these same tools to evaluate curriculum? Teaching? Materials? • What would this look like? Let’s discuss!

  13. Another Activity:Making a quiz

  14. Reverse Quiz Activity • This is similar to a technique I used in my teaching frequently in my HS job – “reverse quizzes.” • I had students create a quiz on a topic, with certain specifications • I would critique the quizzes, and have students revise them • You will – in your same herds as before Spring Break – create a quiz on the “assessment” section of Reading #4 (the textbook chapter on assessment and evaluation) • You will use Quizstar (http://quizstar.4teachers.org) • You will have to create an account • You will need another pair to take your quiz, and give you feedback on how understandable (or not), difficult (or not) your quiz was. • You will need to email a link to or copy of your quiz to Chip • You need to have at least five questions • Honestly, I am not quite sure how well this is going to work, so please bear with me…

  15. When to use (or not use) a Quiz • How could you use a quiz: • in your units? • In your lessons? • In your courses? • When would a quiz be appropriate (or inappropriate)? • Say you wanted to assess how well someone created an advertisement flyer (in DTP) or a basic webpage using HTML? What technology tool could you use?

  16. An exhortation: Your Units

  17. We are in a Post-Break Age • And now the focus of the class shifts to your units • Here is a suggested timeline • Week 10 (now): research, prep, collect resources • Week 11: Create your lesson plans (abbrev form) and your unit plan, and know what you will need to have on each day (and what you will have to create • Week 12:Have at least half of your unit parts created • Week 13: Finalize your units, turn in on Friday (the WHOLE unit is due, and failure to turn in parts will result in a penalty to your final unit grade) • Week 14: We will evaluate each other’s units • Week 15: Revise your units based on these evaluations • Finals Week: Turn in your units on a team-wide website

  18. Simplify our lives • Originally, I wanted each team to have a unified website in Dreamweaver for their unit materials, but I am loosening that requirement • As long as you do not use Google Docs  (long story – I can tell you some time), you can use a Google Site, Dreamweaver, …whatever you want to create a team-wide presentation of your course. • Creating a Dreamweaver-based site could just add unnecessary stress – you have enough to do that week.
