  2. Polio normally was caught in the Summer and the Fall. Summer was feared that someone would catch Polio. This disease normally affects younger children but can also affect older children and adults. Poor hygiene and crowded living encourages the spread of this disease. Polio is a serious disease caused by a virus called the poliovirus. The full medical name for the disease is poliomyelitis. In its severest form, polio causes paralysis (complete loss of muscle function for one or more muscle groups of the muscles of the legs, arms, and respiratory (breathing) system. How did you catch Poliomyelitis (Polio)?

  3. How did you catch Poliomyelitis (Polio) continued Polio is passed on by saliva or feces. It is transmitted when people don’t wash there hands or when using the bathroom. Once someone is infected it can stay in the throat for 3 weeks and once it is in the intestine it can stay in there for about 8 weeks and multiplies very quickly. The disease enters the blood stream and finally through the nervous system and can finally enter the brain.

  4. It can kill people who get it, usually by paralyzing the muscles that help them breathe. What are the Symptoms? Mild Symptoms Severe Symptoms • Low fever • Fatigue • Headache • Sore throat • Vomiting • Nausea 90% of people with Polio have these symptoms but can still pass it on to others. They last for 2-3 days. • Severe headache • Pain and stiffness in the neck and back • Brain becomes inflamed 10% of people with this disease experience these symptoms. They last for around 7 days. The patient usually recovers completely.
