  3. Arborist ExchangeProgram If we were meant to stay in one place we’d have roots instead offeet. TheExchange The Society of Municipal Arborists Exchange Program offers arborists around the world an opportunity to engage with colleagues and experience urban forestry challenges and successes in varying political and culturalsettings. Since 2003, arborists from the United States, Canada, Slovenia, Ireland, Brazil, South Africa, Italy, Germany, New Zealand and the United Kingdom have participated in the program. Exchanges may also include arborists and urban foresters from other sectors, such as utility and non- profits and any profession that involves community trees. Exchange partners are required to be SMA or partner members in goodstanding. How itWorks Exchange partners spend one week together in each other’s community learning about their jobs and how challenges are met under differing circumstances and with differing goals. Partnerships include social time as well as working time. Partners are encouraged to host each other, but one-way exchanges are also acceptable. Transportation expenses arereimbursable. Applications Applications and other information can be found on the SMA website at www.urban-forestry.com. Applications may be submitted at any time and are approved based on available funding, and how the exchange supports the SMA Mission, Values and Objectives. Partners are required to provide a written article for publication in City Trees summarizing their experience. Don’t worry, our Editor can make anyone look like a seasonedauthor. Support theProgram Shop ‘til you drop during the SMA/PCF Conference’s annual silent auction, and score some great deals while supporting the Exchange Program! Plus, this year we’ll be bringing the auction online, so if you can’t make it to the conference, you can still bid from home. Or the office – we won’ttell. P.O.
