  2. WHAT IS YOUR TOPIC? • Your requirement is to research your career choice. • If you are thinking, “I don’t know what I want to do!!”, then choose something you might want to do. It is not set in stone. • Make sure that you have enough resources to do a good paper.

  3. What is your essential question? • There must be a main idea to your research. • What question do you want to answer about this career choice? Examples: • Why is nursing a good career choice? • Is my career choice a good match for my personality? • Where did my career choice originate? Where is going in the future?

  4. Sources: Requirements • Book • Magazine (online or print) • Professional Journal (online or print) • Internet source • There are many more sources available to you. If there is a problem with one of these sources, come to me and we will work out a solution. Regardless, YOU MUST HAVE FOUR DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOURCES!

  5. Research Sources • Search engines on the web • Government sources (gov.org addresses) • NCWiseOwl • Reference desk • iTools • SIR education resources • US newspaper list • Dictionaries • Encyclopedias MOST SOURCES ARE PRINT AND ONLINE

MLA Style: Citing Your Source • You are required to cite every single source you use, or it is plagiarism. • You are required to use MLA style. • MLA stands for Modern Language Association • http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ This is your source for MLA format for your paper. It shows you how to write your citation for the work cited page. • You must also use internal citation in your paper using MLA guidelines.

  7. Bibliography Card Book: 1 Geherin, David. The American Private Eye: The Image in Fiction. New York: Ungar, 1985. Author, last name first. Title of the Book. Place of publication: Publisher, Year of publication.

  8. Note Card Geherin, David. The AmericanPrivate Eye 1 Note cards are where you will take notes on the sources that you are reading. Only use one side of your note card. If you need more than one card per source, use another card, and repeat the author’s name and number in the right hand corner. If you copy directly, make sure you use quotation marks to avoid plagiarism. ALWAYS ALWAYS write down the page number where you copied information. THE PAGE NUMBER IN THE RIGHT HAND CORNER CORRESPONDS WITH THE NUMBER ON THE BIBLIOGRAPHY CARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Additional Info on Note Cards As you read each source, give it the “4 R” test: • Is it relevant? • Is it reliable? • Is it recent? • Is it representative (balanced)?

Typing/Clean Copy • There is no cover page • Make sure your heading is correct • Double-space everything except: • The Work Cited entries/ds between citations • Your note cards do not have to be double-spaced • No slang, no contractions, no first person • YOU MUST HAVE INTERNAL CITATIONS!!!!!!!! Without them, your paper is plagiarized, and I will grade your paper: 0. If you have questions, you need to ask them.
