  3. Where Does It Come From? • Traditional period - before the arrival of Cook in 1769… • 1814 - 1870 - Missionary influence - introduction of hymns and learning to play musical instruments • 1870 - 1930 - Secular period era of the concert party and the development of the waiata-ā-ringa.

  4. What is it? • The Waiata-ā-ringa is an action song. • History and legends are retold in waiata-ā-ringa through song and dance. • Each of the actions reflect the words that the group is singing about. • In some ways, the waiata-ā-ringa is sign language. For example, if you see an action with the hand by the ear, then the team could be talking about listening. An action with the hand by the eyes could be that the team is talking about looking.

  5. Where is it seen/performed? • Waiata is often used during Marae ceremonies to welcome visitors and guests and to give them some understanding about the whakapapa of the iwi. • It is important that performers understand the meaning and importance of a particular Waiata as it will allow them to express the meaning of it appropriately

  6. Waiata-ā-ringa Movements • There are several basic Waiata movements that are performed during ceremonial dance. • The most common hand movement is the Wiri • This is when the hands move side to side with a trembling movement through the wrists • It represents the movement of nature which occurs around us

  7. To learn more… • We are going to watch a DVD on Māori Kapa Haka • And then we are going to try some
