  3. Previous Solution Attempts • All current products on themarket are REACTIVE to Stress Fractures • A mid-foot brace designed to distribute weight • Foot shell • Stiff soled shoes

  4. Design Justifications/Considerations • Consumer Considerations • All designs must have the following factors • Inexpensive • Interchangeable use • Ease of operation • Attractive or Easily Camouflaged

  5. Multiple Solutions Considered • Considering the other products on the market are Reactive, why not be PROACTIVE and prevent stress fractures before they occur! • Possibilities • Strap on shock absorber • Shock absorbing shoe • Shock absorbing sock • Spring shoes • Hydraulic shoes

  6. D3O • New shock absorbing material • Rate sensitive: the harder the impact, the greater its shock absorbing qualities • Used for a range of high impact protection

Prototype Design Considerations • If the product is to be successful, the following factors must be considered • Contours to the foot for a comfortable fit • Must have an effective shock absorbing component material • Our choice – Dr. Sholl’sActive Series Inserts • Strong sock that wont slip during use • Right and Left markings to prevent confusion and ill-fit • Fully Washable

  8. Technical Drawing Winning Design Idea Shock Absorbing Sock Shoxsox!

  9. Prototype Construction: Mk1 Initial Prototype • Basic sock • Orthopedic insert • Insert Removable

  10. Advanced/Working Prototype: Mk2 Working Prototype • Full Length Tube Athletic Sock • Short Ankle Sock • Shock absorbing material shaped to conform to the foot • Footbed insert attached to full length sock via fabric glue • Short Ankle Sock attached over Tube Sock Insert Combination

  11. Prototype Testing • Continuous running • Jumping jacks • Running on treadmill • Running on pavement/hard surface

  12. Testing Results • Initial testing revealed an improvement in comfort and decrease in pain • When surveyed, 80% of test subjects said that Shocksox were more comfortable and that they felt that they reduced harsh impact on their feet and shins
