  7. 2. Outline two ways that the Soviet Union reacted to the ‘Prague Spring’. • The USSR Sent in Warsaw Pact soldiers • Dubcek was summoned to Moscow. • The Brezhnev Doctrine What knowledge do you need? • 400,000 soldiers sent to Prague • 1968 • Ulbricht (GDR) and Golmulka (Poland) pressurised Brezhnev • Czechs would not co-operate with the Soviet troops. • Dubcek was not executed. Eventually expelled from the Communist party. His fate was different to that of Nagy’s (Hungary 1956). Replaced by Husak. • Brezhnev (doctine) was trying to re-establish Soviet control over the satelite states. Force would be used whenever necessery to keep control of Soviet Satellite states. This was similar to the Truman Doctrine.

  9. Source Utility East Germany Berlin Wall Walter Ulbricht, leader of West Germany in 1960 West Germany are Nazi’s (Facists)

  10. Source Utility

  11. Source utility – enquiry question • This question is asking you to consider how useful the sources are for the reasons for the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961. • How is utility different from reliability? • Utility is about whether the source is useful – what value it has. Reliability is about whether the source can be trusted. Reliability can be brought into utility – the reliability of a source is important in making a judgement on its utility. However, utility is not part of reliability. • Consider: 1) How comprehensive the sources are? Are they biased? 2) What own knowledge do you have? 3) Do they add or confirm your own knowledge • Do not: • Just use the sources without your own knowledge • Say why they are useful nor not. Do both sides for both sources. Back up with your own knowledge. • This is not a reliability question (paper 3). You are being asked to consider usefulness to an enquiry question.

  15. Question 5 - importance How to answer these questions? • Start by showing some of your own knowledge of the event in question. E.g dates, people involved • Now explain why it was important? • Did it make worse or improve relations between the USA and USSR? • Did it lead to another major event? 3) Spend 5 minutes on each one only.
