  2. Lesson Overview

  3. universe: all of space and everything in it • scientific theory: explanation for aspects of the natural world • galaxies: group of stars, dust, gas and matter held together by gravity • astronomer: a scientist who studies stars, planets and other objects in outer space • dwarf: a star small in size and not very bright Word Wall

  4. Declare the Objective Read the learning objective to your partner. The world in which we live is made up of our planet Earth, its water, land, peoples, flora, fauna and everything else in it. Making Connections Students, you know about our Earth and the world in which we live. Now, we are going to learn about the universe and the scientific theory of creation. On your whiteboards write down two things that you know about our Earth as a planet. Pair Share Discuss what you wrote on your whiteboard. How is your knowledge similar or different to your partner? Vocabulary • all of space and everything in it • explanation for aspects of the natural world Learning Objective We will describe the universe1within which we live and the scientific theory2 of its creation. Activating Prior Knowledge

  5. Teacher Dialogue Students, listen while I read about what the universe is. The focus word for the paragraph has been highlighted for you. The Universe Our world, the Earth, is a planet located within a bigger place called the universe. The universeis made up of all of space and everything in it including energy which is what makes things move and work. Checking For Understanding What does the word “universe” mean? Where is Earth located? The universe is all of what? Vocabulary • group of stars, dust, gas and matter held together by gravity The Universe includes galaxies3 that are made up of stars, dust, gas and other matter, as well as our Solar System of planets, stars and moons. Concept Development The Universe can be described as everything that exists ,including matter and energy, throughout time and space. 5

  6. Teacher Dialogue Students, the Big Bang is a scientific theory of how the universe was created. This happened a very long time ago and people were not there to view it. People may have different views on how the universe was created including personal, religious, cultural and spiritual beliefs. The Big Bang The Big Bang is a scientific theory, or idea, that astronomers4 use to explain how the universe began. Scientists believe that the universe was created approximately 14 billion years ago and started with a mass explosion that they refer to as ‘The Big Bang’. Checking For Understanding What is the universe? How do scientists think the universe was created? Does everybody believe the universe was created the same way? According to scientists, how long ago was the universe created? The Big Bang theory is one theory to explain the creation of the universe that is backed by scientific evidence, but is not the only idea that exists as to how the universe was created. Some people hold different views on creation that are connected to their cultural or religious beliefs. Vocabulary • Scientists who study stars, planets and other objects in outer space Concept Development The Universe can be described as everything that exists including matter and energy throughout time and space. The Big Bang is the name given to the scientific theory of its creation. 6

  7. Teacher Dialogue Students, listen while I read the text. Some words are highlighted because they tellimportant facts about the Big Bang. The Big Bang Scientists believe that the universe was created from a big explosion. Scientists think the universe was inside a tiny bubble, so tiny you could not see it. This bubble was hot and became hotter and hotter until it suddenly exploded.According to scientists, time, space and matter all began with the explosion that we now call The Big Bang. Following this explosion, scientists believe that the universe grew to the size of a galaxy and then continued to grow at a fantastic speed. It is still moving and expanding today. Checking For Understanding What is the scientific theory of creation called? According to scientists, what caused the explosion? Students, use your whiteboards to answer the following questions. Scientists believe that the universe was created from a? big explosion The universe was inside what? a tiny bubble What happened when the bubble became hotter? Pair Share Discuss whether being a scientist is an important occupation and why? it exploded What happened after the explosion? The universe grew very quickly What is the Big Bang theory? It is the theory scientists use to explain the creation of the universe. Guided Practice The universe can be described as everything that exists including matter and energy throughout time and space. The Big Bang is the name given to the scientific theory of its creation. 7

  8. Teacher Dialogue Students, listen while I read the text. Some words are highlighted because they tellimportant information about the universe. Universe When you look into the night sky you are looking into the universe. The universe is huge and made up of billions of galaxies and millions of stars. The space between the stars and galaxies is mostly empty but does contain dust. Space is filled with light and heat, which is called radiation, and energy which is known as cosmic rays. Checking For Understanding What is space filled with? What is the universe made up of? A galaxy is: A. a space video game B. a group of stars, dust, gas and matter C. a planet Students, use your true or false cards to answer the statements. The universe is made up of galaxies and stars. TRUE The universe is tiny and made up of stars. FALSE Pair Share What do you now know about the universe in which we live? Space is filled with light and heat. TRUE Energy in space is known as cosmic rays. TRUE There is no dust in space. FALSE Guided Practice The universe can be described as everything that exists including matter and energy throughout time and space. The Big Bang is the name given to the scientific theory of its creation. 8

  9. Teacher Directions Draw a whirlpool on the board and explain it is a rotating mass. Milky Way Galaxy We live in a large spiral galaxy called the Milky Way which is part of the universe. It is shaped like a big whirlpool. Our galaxy is made up of the Sun and its planets including Earth. The Milky Way has more than 100 billion stars, as well as bits of dust and gas. Once every 200 million years the Milky Way rotates. It would take you 100 000 years to travel across our galaxy if you travelled at the speed of light. (Light travels at 300 000kms per second). Teacher Dialogue Students, listen while I read the text. Some words have been highlighted because they tell important information about our galaxy. Checking For Understanding What is our galaxy made up of? Is the Milky Way part of our universe? How many kilometresswill light travel in 3 seconds? Students, use your whiteboards to answer the following questions. What type of galaxy do we live in? spiral galaxy The Milky Way has how many stars? 100 billion There is dust and what else in our galaxy, the Milky Way. gas Once every 200 million years the Milky Way does what? rotates How many kilometres will light travel in 5 seconds? 1500 000 Guided Practice The Universe can be described as everything that exists including matter and energy throughout time and space. The Big Bang is the name given to the scientific theory of its creation. 9

  10. Teacher Directions Resources: Video Clip to consolidate knowledge of planets. Read the text and discuss highlighted words. Solar System Our Earth is part of our Solar System which is just one of billions of solar systems in the universe. Our Solar System is made up of all the planets and smaller objects that orbit our Sun. There are eight planets including the rocky planets of Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. There are four gas giants called Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. These planets are mostly made up of the gases hydrogen and helium. Pluto was known as a planet but astronomers now think it is too small to be a planet and it is now called a dwarf5 planet. Jupiter Mercury Venus Saturn Earth Uranus Neptune Mars Checking For Understanding What is the Solar System made up of? What type of planet is Earth? What is no longer considered a planet and why? Students, use true or false cards to answer the statements. There is only one solar system in the universe. FALSE TRUE There are eight planets. There is no such thing as a dwarf planet. FALSE TRUE There are four rocky planets and Earth is one of them. Vocabulary • a star small in size and not very bright Pluto is a planet. FALSE The gas giant planets are made up of hydrogen and helium gases. TRUE Guided Practice The universe can be described as everything that exists including matter and energy throughout time and space. The Big Bang is the name given to the scientific theory of its creation. 10

  11. By describing the universe and the scientific theory of creation through The Big Bang, you will better understand the world within which we live and the way in which scientists contribute to our knowledge of our universe. The creation of the universe marks the start of the epic timeline of the universe. Pair Share Why is it relevant to know about the universe and the scientific theory of creation? Relevance 11

  12. Students, complete this cloze activity in your handout. Use words from the word bank to fill the spaces.
