What is Ethics? • Ethical behavior consists of… • Attempting to create/produce a reasonably balanced mixture of the human goods for yourself • Attempting to assist or help othersto (co-) create/produce a reasonably balanced mixture for themselves. • Avoiding, or helping to prevent, the opposite: (i) co-producing an imbalance (in self or in others), or (ii) co-producing an excessive amount of any of the bads (extremes) • The overall effect is to minimize the total amount of suffering (arguably including the suffering of all sentient beings or entities’) • Human-goods: • health, wealth, friendship, aesthetics (mainly objective, eg $, beauty, etc) • happiness, pleasure (internal psychological states) • positive- freedoms, negative-freedoms; justice & fairness (mainly objective partly subjective social-political conditions) Human ‘bads’ arethe opposite of each of the HG’s: Sickness, poverty (various forms), injustice, isolation, ugliness, misery, pain, denial-of-opportunity, oppression.
