  3. ASA Properties • Road Running • Mass participation, reaching over 200,000 athletes. • 100,000 athletes registered with clubs, the other 100,000 are temporary licensed athletes • 1012 clubs, predominately road running. • 820 road races held across the country annually

Commercial / Challenges • Pre 1992 – Strong sponsorship programme supported by large corporations supported by the government of the day • 1992 – White CEO – ASA financially sound • 1996 – Black leadership – no sponsor renewals • Lack of confidence in the leadership of ASA because of colour? • Current corporate support of “white federations” (cricket) • Continual television support of the big five professional codes • Television coverage • Lack of support for airtime in athletics • Live coverage of World Championships / Olympic Games
