Effective note taking

If the teacher writes it on the board, write it in your notes. During lecture, write down key words, not everything that is said. Listen for clues that may sound like these: “to sum up,” “the two causes were,” “remember this,” “this is an important point,” or “this is not in your book.”

  1. If the teacher writes it on the board, write it in your notes. During lecture, write down key words, not everything that is said. Listen for clues that may sound like these: “to sum up,” “the two causes were,” “remember this,” “this is an important point,” or “this is not in your book.” Develop your own SHORTHAND (abbreviate words or use your own code).   2. Start by folding your page – leave about 2/3 of right margin Leave a wide left margin so you can write extra info or reorganize notes. DATE each day of information! Write down definitions for any terms you don’t know. Show important info by indenting, enlarging, underlining, and/or using different color ink. Use the LEFT margin to pull out key words & create quiz questions NOTE TAKING TIPS

Manifest Destiny, Westward Expansion, captive narratives to modern day Star Trek “the Final Frontier” – literature reflects this fascination • Applies to literature – American Literature is fixated on the “experience” of renewal that happens when characters cross into “savage” frontier • Example in class: City Slickers – urban renewal Who originated the Frontier Thesis? What is this thesis and how does it apply to literature? Example of what you’ll be doing during this lecture!!!!

  4. Take COPIOUS notes during this lecture (today/tomorrow) using this note-taking system! FOR Monday: NOTE ASSIGNMENT Create AT LEAST 4 questions in your left margin area relating to the notes you’ve taken in class. (You will receive 5 pts per question = 20 pts) ALL lecture quizzes will be OPEN NOTE – the better organized, and more thorough your notes, the better you will do on your NOTE QUIZZES YOUR ASSIGNMENT & HOMEWORK FOR MONDAY
