SYED MUHAMMAD NAQUIB AL-ATTAS • Full name: Syed Muhammad al Naquib bin Ali Bin Abdullah Bin Muhsin Al-Attas • Date of birth: September 5, 1931 • Place of birth: Bogor, Jawa, Indonesia • He is a polymath and his scholarship spans philosophy, theology, metaphysics, history, culture, education and literature.

  3. FAMILY • Grandfather: Syed Abdullah • Grandmother: RuqayahHanum • Eldest brother: Syed Hussein (He is a sociologist & former rector of the University Malaya.) • Youngest brother: SyedZaid (He is a chemical scientist.)

  4. EARLY EDUCATION • 1936-1941: Primary education at NgeeHeng School in Johore. • When Japan colonised Malaya, he went back to Java to study Arabic at Madrasah Al-Urwatul-wuthaqa. • After WW2 he returned to Johore to continue his education. • 1946: Bukit Zarah School & English College • 1951 : Finished secondary school education.

Further Education • 1951: He entered Malay Regiment as a cadet officer (No : 6675). • 1952-1955: He studied at Eton Hall, Chester, Wales & Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in England. • During this time he worked on Jami, as he found materials in the library he used. • He traveled to Spain & North Africa to know more about Islamic culture & architecture.

  6. 1957-1959: He entered the University of Malaya in Singapore. • While studying there, he wrote Rangkaian Ruba’iyat& Some Aspects of Sufism as Understood & Practised among the Malay. • These two books are his earliest work.

  7. MA & PhD • 1959-1962: He completed his MA in Islamic Philosophy at Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill, Canada. He wrote a thesis entitled Raniri & the Wujudiyyah of 17th Century Acheh. • He wants to prove that the rise of Islam in the region is not because of Dutch colonization but because of the inherent value of Islam itself. • He was also interested in Sufism in Malaysia and Indonesia.

  8. 1965: He did a PhD at the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), London University. • His doctoral thesis was The Mysticism of HamzahFanshuri. • He completed his PhD in a very short time, which shows his enormous intellectual ability.

  9. Career • 1965: Head of the Division of Literature, the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. • 1968-1970: Dean of the Faculty of Arts. • 1971: Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Head of the Department of Malay Language & Literature at National University of Malaysia.

  10. Cont… • 1973: Founding Director of The Institute of Malay Language, Literature & Culture (IBKKM). • 1976: Principal Consultant to the World of Islam Festival in London. • 1976: An honorary speaker at the International Islamic Conference held in London.

  11. WORKS • He wrote 26 books & monographs in English and Malay languages. • Some of his books are translated into Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Turkish, French, German, Russian, Hindi, Korean & Albanian.

  13. Recent activity in Malaysia • Seminar on “The Usage of the Word Allah,” December 13, 2009. • Persatuan Kebangsaan Pelajar Islam Malaysia (PKPIM) with the collaboration of Himpunan Keilmuan Muda (HAKIM) and Institut Integriti Malaysia (IIM).

  14. ISLAMIZATION • Syed Naquib al-Attas was the one who coined the term ‘the Islamization of Knowledge’ in the 1970s. • IIUM is the first university to fully apply the Islamization of Knowledge concept, followed by USIM.
