  1. Sirens Item #9-Mythology and Legend

  2. Greek Mythology • In Greek mythology, Sirens were sea creatures who lured sailors to their death on the rocky shores by singing a beautiful, irresistible song. They usually depicted as woman, or as half-woman, half bird.

  3. Modern Usage • In modern usage, “sirens” can refer to anything that tempts a person away from safety and toward a destructive path. A “siren song” is the temptation used to lure a person

  4. Examples • In his Speech in the Virginia Convention, Patrick Henry urged his listeners not to be fooled by an “illusion of hope,” saying, “We are apt to shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that siren, till she transforms us into beast.” He is comparing false hope both to the sirens and to Circe, who turned Odysseus’ men into swine.

  5. Example 2 • I had intended to stay home and study for finals, but the siren song of my friend describing all the fun we could have at the lake was too much for me to resist.

  6. Sirens are just ugly mermaids who kill sailors because they are jealous & mean. #tbh

  7. You may have seen sirens in the movie Sinbad ledgend of the seven seas The sailor of legend is framed by the goddess Eris for the theft of the Book of Peace, and must travel to her realm at the end of the world to retrieve it and save the life of his childhood friend Prince Proteus.
