  1. 2. Welcome! • We will soon be getting practical with the Wordpress sites you’ve created. Could you please get ready by opening a new browser window on your PC and logging into Wordpress.com with your username and password.

  3. In this session: • Making a basic community website come alive - how to structure, layout, and organise a website into categories • Sharing experiences so far • Troubleshooting • Management Information for talk about local

  4. Bringing your website to life.

  5. The Parish Post - village website for Clunbury, Shropshire. • Clean, light theme with customised header of local scene. • Some good themes are: • Twenty Ten • Mistylook • Coraline • Ocean Mist • Vigilance • Connections

  6. Difference between ‘pages’ and ‘posts’.

  7. Updates and news items appear as posts on the front page.

  8. Points of unchanging information on separate pages.

  9. http://Kingtonblackboard.org UK online centre – Marches Access Point Started August 2009 with TAL

  10. Orders posts into subject categories • Readers can simply click on subject in Categories widget in sidebar to read all posts under that topic.

  11. Moretonhampstead Hub created as part of talk about local earlier this year - ‘a new space for Moretonians to express themselves and for ideas and knowledge to be shared.’

  12. Uses ‘tags’ as well as ‘categories’ to sort posts. • Makes more specific information easier to find, e.g. rather than trawling through posts in the ‘Arts’ category for sculpture, a search for ‘sculpture‘ will bring up tagged posts.

  13. Log into your Wordpress website and edit a previously published post. • Categorise the post (add a new category if you do not have any) • Add tags to your post • Update!

  14. Go to ‘Appearance’ then ‘Widgets’ • Drag the ‘Categories’ widget to your sidebar • In the drop-down Categories box in the sidebar, give it the title ‘Categories and select the ‘Show heirarchy’ option. Press ‘Save’ and ‘Close’. • This will give your website a side menu of Categories

  15. Other useful widgets for your sidebar • ‘Comments‘ - brings discussion on the website to the forefront. • ‘Tag Cloud‘ - Shows your most-used post tags in an attractive, ‘cloud‘ format so readers can click to read posts about popular subjects. • ‘Blog Subscriptions‘ - allows readers to subscribe to receive email updates from your website. • William Perrin TAL
