  1. GIS In NWS Kari Sheets NWS GIS/Geospatial Project Lead OST Ira Graffman SEC GIS Focal Point OST

  2. Overview of What’s Happening in NWS • Over 300 users of GIS in NWS • Representing all classes of GIS • Desktop, Server, and Mobile • Collaborate via email listserve • Regional representatives meet monthly via telecon • GIS formatted data (shapefiles) used as map backgrounds for AWIPS • Prototypes for server and mobile applications • National project to set-up governance & coordination of national projects (OSIP 06-003)

  3. Desktop GIS • Displays & analyzes geo-spatial data from local/network drives and/or web services • Current Desktop Activities • Create/maintain AWIPS map backgrounds • Determine current and proposed WSR88D, ARSR and TDWR coverages • Graphics for presentations including Congressional briefings • Forecast verification studies • Manipulating variables (scaling & projecting) for use in statistical guidance development

  4. Server GIS • Provides users with data which can be: • Displayed & or queried in a web portal • Downloaded and ingested into client’s GIS • Used for custom Decision Support applications • “Web Services” are the predominate request for weather data by customers & partners visiting NOAA booths at technical conferences • Current/Planned Server Activities • WMS Service as backend will be used to deliver RIDGE data in version II • NDFD prototype

  15. How do we get there? • Establish/Formalize National GIS Team • Budget & other process to establish program office • Failed to make IAT list for FY12 • Data portion request was submitted as part of FY12 GAP • Set up & Implement change management process for GIS projects • Build server with guidelines adhering to NWS web/internet & weather enterprise directives • Document requirements for systems • Stand-up Help Desks • Work w/NexGen WIDB team to satisfy their GIS requirements

  16. Current Server users • Department of Homeland Security • National Communications System • Office of Infrastructure Protection • Icav • FEMA • Environmental Protection Agency • Air Quality • New Mexico Department of Transportation • Big REST advocate • Dept Health and Human Services • (HRSA)
