  2. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE? To be in compliance with the Colorado Department of Education recommendations. To ensure that every APS student has the opportunity to be screened for advanced level and/or gifted services. PACESETTERS!

  3. WHAT TEST WILL WE USE FOR SCREENING? NNAT (Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test) Hence: Naglieri PACESETTERS!

  4. WHY THE NAGLIERI? PACESETTERS!

  5. Appropriate as a measure of general ability • Predictor of scholastic achievement • Appropriate for diverse cultural and language backgrounds (hearing, language, or motor impairment). • Designed for fair assessment of socially or economically disadvantaged students. • The Naglieri is a non-verbal test • Instructions are very short PACESETTERS!

  6. Who will be tested? ALL 2nd GRADERS (NOT ALREADY IDENTIFIED AS GIFTED) PACESETTERS!

  7. FOUR CLUSTERS THAT ARE LOOKED AT FOR 2nd GRADERS: • PATTERN COMPLETION • REASONING BY ANALOGY • SERIAL REASONING • SPATIAL VISUALIZATION PACESETTERS!

  8. PATTERN COMPLETION REQUIRES THE STUDENT TO COMPLETE A PATTERN BY DETERMINING THE GENERAL ORIENTATION AND DESIGN DETAILS OF A MISSING PIECE ? PACESETTERS!

  9. REASONING BY ANALOGY REQUIRES THE STUDENT TO RECOGNIZE A LOGICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SEVERAL GEOMETRIC SHAPES ? PACESETTERS!

  10. SERIAL REASONING REQUIRES THE STUDENT TO RECOGNIZE A SEQUENCE OF SHAPES AND CHANGES IN THE SEQUENCE ? PACESETTERS!

  11. SPATIAL VISUALIZATION Requires the student to recognize how two or more designs would looks when combined. ? PACESETTERS!

  12. HOW SHOULD I BEGIN ADMINISTERING THE TEST? SCHEDULE • WHAT ROOM/GROUP? • WHAT DAY? • WHAT TIME? PACESETTERS!

  13. BEFORE GOING TO TEST HAVE TEST BOOKS ALREADY LABELED TO ELIMINATE UNNECESSARY DOWN TIME FOR STUDENTS DATE NAME SCHOOL TEACHER GRADE PACESETTERS!

  14. WHAT MATERIALS WILL I NEED DURING TESTING SESSION? DIRECTIONS – ADMIN BOOK NNAT TEST BOOK FOR EACH STUDENT (+1 for the examiner) ½ SHEET OF PAPER FOR A MARKER 2-#2 PENCILS WITH AN ERASER CLOCK A “TESTING-DO NOT DISTURB” SIGN PACESETTERS!

  15. ALSO! BEFORE TESTING . . . BE FAMILIAR WITH TEST MATERIALS BY REVIEWING DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY AND . . . BY TAKING THE TEST!!!!! PACESETTERS!

  16. STUDENTS WILL HAVE 30 MINUTES TO COMPLETE THE TEST PACESETTERS!

  17. MORE TO THINK ABOUT: THE ROOM SEATING ONE PROCTOR FOR EVERY 25 STUDENTS However, it is recommended that you have 1 or 2 other staff members to help ensure students aren’t skipping questions or pages! Picking up the PACE!

  18. MAKE SURE DESKS ARE FREE OF ANY OBJECTS (BOOKS AND PAPERS) PACESETTERS!

  19. DURING THE TEST • SPEND AS MUCH TIME AS IS NEEDED FOR STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY NEED TO DO, AND HOW THEY ARE TO MARK THEIR ANSWERS. • NEVER MAKE UP YOUR OWN SAMPLES – REPEAT THE SAMPLE DIRECTIONS ONLY. PACESETTERS!

  20. ONCE TEST BEGINS . . . GIVE STUDENTS WHATEVER HELP THEY NEED WITH MARKING OR TURNING PAGES . . . BUT . . . DO NOT HELP THEM WITH SPECIFIC TEST ITEMS. PACESETTERS!

  21. MAKE SURE STUDENTS DO NOT ACCIDENTALLY SKIP PAGES WHEN TURNING PAGES. RECOMMENDED: USE ½ SHEET MARKERS SO THEY ONLY SEE ONE PROBLEM AT A TIME. DEMONSTRATE PACESETTERS!

  22. FOR STUDENTS WHO SEEM TO SLOW DOWN OR WHO APPEAR TO GIVE UP, ENCOURAGE However, IF a student is crying, or has COMPLETELY shut down, excuse them from completing the test. If you feel they are able, you can attempt to have themcomplete test individually with student if parent gives permission. PACESETTERS!

  23. AFTER THE TEST COLLECT BOOKS VERIFY ALL PROBLEMS WERE MARKED BY EACH STUDENT (if not, encourage them to select an answer) PACESETTERS!

  24. SCORING Scoring will be done in the Division of Accountability and Research. **Send all booklets via school mail to Div. of A and R no later than October 25th PACESETTERS!

  25. WHEN YOU SEND BACK TEST BOOKS: MAKE SURE TOP BOX ON BACK OF TEST IS COMPLETE ON EACH TEST. 2. STUDENTS ARE GROUPED BY TEACHER. 3. FILL OUT NAMES OF STUDENTS PER CLASS ON THE CLASS RECORD FORM (return with test books). PACESETTERS!

  26. WHAT NOW? AFTER EACH TEST HAS BEEN SCORED • THE COMPLETED CLASS RECORDS SHEET WILL BE RETURNED TO YOUR BUILDING. • TEST BOOKLETS WILL BE RETURNED TO YOUR BUILDING. (TO BE PUT IN STUDENT CUM FOLDERS). • AGATE TOSA AND AGATE LEADER IN YOUR BUILDING WILL MAKE FURTHER DETERMINATIONS FOR STUDENT PROGRAMMING/AGATE IDENTIFICATION. • COMMUNICATION TO THE PARENTS WILL BE SHARED AT CONFERENCES BY THE CLASSROOM TEACHER.
