  3. Purpose of CAD • The purpose of Computer-Aided-Design (CAD) is improve the quality, cost and duration of design projects. CAD involves using the computer to facilitate either a 3D model or 2D model of a design. • 3D is quite useful for machine design, architectural and civil work • 2D is very practical tool when the design involves primarily layout, such as a floor plan, machine part, a map, electrical schematic, printed circuit board layout and the like. • The architect, engineer, or designer conceives a design and then has to decide on the characteristics of the design such as size, material, and function. The design is then analyzed mathematically to determine if it meets the requirements for which it was intended and meets standards such as building codes. Finally, a design is documented and then manufactured or constructed. • CAD is a very useful way to record the design on a computer early on in the design cycle such that the design can be analyzed with computer methods and then automatically documented. • We will be using a CAD software product called VersaCAD to learn the concepts which are common in all CAD.
