  2. WHAT IS COMEDY??? Comedy is a genre of film that uses humour as entertainment for the audience. COMEDY IS A LITERARY GENRE AND A TYPE OF DRAMATIC WORK THAT IS AMUSING AND SATIRICAL IN ITS TONE, MOSTLY HAVING A CHEERFUL ENDING. thE MOTIF OF THIS DRAMATIC WORK IS TRIUMPH OVER UNPLEASANT CIRCUMSTANCE BY CREATING COMIC EFFECTS, RESULTING IN A HAPPY OF SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION

HISTORY OF COMEDY • coMEDY GENRE HAS BEEN ONE OF THE LONGEST LASTING GENRES IN FILM, MOST OF THE EARLY SILENT FILMS WERE COMICAL AND MOST HAD A HAPPY ENDING TO THEM. • SILENT FILMS DIDN’T HAVE ANY DIALOGUE THEY MAINLY USED SOUND EFFECTS TO EMPHASISE THE FUNNY ACTION AND AN ORCHESTRA TO FIT WITH THE MOOD, IF THEY NEEDED ANY WORDS TO REPRESENT DIALOGUE THEY WOULD INSERT BLACK FRAMES WITH WHITE PRINTING ON THEM BETWEEN SHOTS OR SCENES.

  4. WHAT ARE THE CONVENTIONS OF COMEDY? LIGHTING, SOUND AND SETTING WITHIN THE COMEDY GENRE - The lighting is usually natural and bright in comedy films, owing to the light-hearted nature of the genre - - Sound within comedy is important. Diegetic sound, is a key convention of comedy, the speech used by characters, create the comic effect as well as developing their character and personality. Non-Diegetic sound can be sound effects or background music. This can add comedic effect and sound motifs for characters setting the mood and atmosphere of the scene. - - Comedy films are usually set in brightly lit, public places adding a sense of relatability to audience members.

CAMERA WORK/SHOTS AND PROP CONVENTIONS - CLOSE UP shots are commonly used within the comedy genre to emphasize the reactions and facial expressions of characters or signify important aspects to the plot. - Another common shot seen in comedic films is a wide shot. This can be to show the action occuring between characters. This could be to show a conflict eg/ a fight or comedic violence or to show a romantic moment between two characters. - Props in many British drama films are those such as drugs, alcohol, knives and mobile phones. Comedy takes realistic situations and pokes fun for comedic effect.

  6. SUB-GENRES BURLESQUE - Burlesque is tied together with vaudeville and owes its roots to early night clubs where the humour was sexual and risqué. Mae West films would be an example of early burlesque films, which began losing their appeal by the mid- thirties when a strict moral code was adapted to cinema. ROMANTIC COMEDY - Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back are the tried and true rules of Hollywood romantic comedies. The romantic comedy genre are films which contain light-hearted humour, they center around the idea that true love can overcome any obstacles. BLACK COMEDY - Black comedy depends on making an audience uncomfortable and drawing laughter from taboo subjects in exploring film such as murder, sex, religion and politics.

  7. PARODY -A parody aims to ridicule, impersonate the style or convention of a concept like, religion, genres. Parody imitates, stresses and draws attention to certain features, characters or plot points which are weak and subject to criticism. It allows comedians to take on serious issues while still making us laugh. SCREWBALL SLAPSTICK - The characters are unlike anything we except, in films like ‘Bringing Up Baby’ (1938). Screwball comedy is a subgenre of the romantic comedy genre, originating in the early 1930s and thriving until the early 1940s. It satirized the traditional love story. -This form of comedy depends on the physical pain and humiliation of a character for laughs. It is widely considered to be the lowest form of comedy there is .
