  3. 1 in 5 people on Earth are aged between 10 -19 Generations 50% are under 25 TV generation Typewriters Memos Radio • The Web (72%) • Mobile devices • IM (74%) • Text Messaging • Online communities • MP3 • Video games • Computers • Email • CD 54% of students (grades 7-12) know more IM screen names than home phone numbers

For this Generation… • Ctrl + Alt + Del is as basic as ABC • Computers have always been there (and can fit in their backpacks!) • The Internet is better than TV • Can switch quickly between real and virtual • Doing is more important than knowing • Multitasking is a way of life • Typing is preferred to handwriting • Staying connected is essential • There is zero tolerance for delays • Consumer and creator are blurring • Bert and Ernie are old enough to be their parents

Net Gen and Brain Based Theory • To effect learning neural pathways need to be developed. • Passive learning can cause dendritic dieback and stunted neurons. • Active engagement develops neurons. The corpus collussum is better developed in millennials due to multitasking. • As a result: • Linear thought process is much less common than piecing together information from multiple sources. • Highly developed visual spatial skills(maybe from games), able to integrate virtual and physical. • Prefer inductive discovery, they learn better by discovery than exposition.

The good news • Beginning to manifest a range of positive social habits including a new focus on teamwork, achievement, modesty, and good conduct. • Identify with their parents’ values and feel close to their parents • Believe “It’s cool to be smart” (80%) • Believe doing well in school is important in their lives (96%) • Positive attitudes • Goal oriented • Hopeful & confident • Social conscience • Inclusive • Are fascinated by new technologies • Have unprecedented impact on adult purchases!!

  7. The context Students must be prepared with the 21st century skills required to participate and thrive in an increasingly technological society. Teachers must provide learning environments which cater for the Net Generation (millennials).
