Parliament • Remember this? • 1215 Magna Carta • Required king to consult a parliament and to rule lawfully • (Not all monarchs ruled according to the Magna Carta) • So what exactly is parliament then? • A group of people who help rule fairly by making laws, dealing with tax$ etc. Charles I’s biggest problem was that he abused his power and relationship with parliament

  5. Trouble in Scotland • Charles tries to force Scottish people to worship under the Church of England • In anger Scottish people rebel against him • Charles needs to pay an army to defeat the revolt • Parliament sides with the Scottish • Not surprisingly Charles gets rid of parliament

Named “Long Parliament” because it was in power for 13 years The Long Parliament • Charles still needs so he calls upon a new parliament • New Parliament is stricter than the last one • Executed two of Charles advisors • Tried to change the role of the king in government and remove many of his powers

  7. One Fatal Move…. • Charles wants to regain power • Leads 500 soldiers into the House of Commons and tries to arrest parliament leaders • Some leaders escaped and called for an army Charles/Monarchy VS Parliament in Civil War
