Outcomes Associated with Exposure to DV • Poor children of all ages disproportionately affected by violence • School-aged at risk for developmental problems • High rate of internalizing and externalizing behavior problems • Interpersonal problems: heightened fear/worry re. those in home; difficulty establishing/maintaining friendships • Clinical levels of trauma-related stress • Individual differences-”sleeper effect”

Outcomes 2-Preschoolers • Most have behavior problems in clinical range (74% boys, 60% girls) • Increased sx of trauma and dissociation • Impaired empathy • Restricted social problem-solving ability (when mother battered and depressed) • Difficulty regulating expression of negative emotion • More aggressive/violent in interpersonal play
