Confused About SMS and Metrics? • What is SMS ? – Sustainability Metrics Scorecard • Set of goals(e.g. WWMC, HHH, Clean up, Stakeholder Meetings, Learners to Leaders, NOVs…) • Information for the scorecard is reported to Smithfield Foods in two ways: • Web Metrics Incident Reports: • location personnel “report and incident” • system generates emails • Web Metrics Surveys: • location personnel fill out monthly surveys • users generate charts and extract numerical data Does 1 = 2 ????? by Sylwia LaBudde

Reporting SMS and Other EventsIncident Types Available in Web Metrics Environmental / Regulatory SMS & Other **SMS** - Helping Hungry Homes (HHH) **SMS** - Community Clean Up **SMS** - World Water Monitoring Challenge **SMS** - FFA or 4-H Event **SMS** - Stakeholder Meeting **SMS** - Environmental Project Submitted **SMS** - Health & Wellness Program **SMS** - Nutrition Assessment **SMS** - Learners to Leaders Award, Recognition, or Other Event Non-SMS Event • Spill • Release • Near Miss • NOV • NOV Rescinded • Regulator Visit / Audit • Information Received / Potential NOV • Odor, Noise, or 3rd Party Concern by Sylwia LaBudde

Reporting SMS and Other Events Select the location where event occurred (IOC ECs have multiple locations) Select date when the event occurred, NOT when it is being reported Describe the incident in detail – check protocols for requested information Select the type of incident according to the reporting protocols **Optional** Add additional recipients that are NOT on the distribution list Add additional notes if needed Attach documents by Sylwia LaBudde

  5. Environmental / Regulatory • Spill– reportable spill of a liquid or solid material • Release– reportable release of a gas or vapor material • Near Miss– spill or release below the RQ (reportable quantity) • - value within 10% (but not over) permit limits by Sylwia LaBudde

Environmental / Regulatory • Potential NOV– lab results, tests, or other data indicating potential • permit exceedence or regulatory non-compliance • NOV– received a letter from regulatory agency citing a violation • NOV Rescinded– received a letter from regulatory agency rescinding • a previously issued violation by Sylwia LaBudde

Environmental / Regulatory • Regulator Visit / Audit– visit, audit or inspection by an outside agency • Odor, Noise, or other 3rd Party Concern – odor, noise, or any other • incidents conveyed by a 3rd party. Includes emails, phone calls and/or • letters from: • private citizens • businesses • regulators • local government by Sylwia LaBudde

SMS & Other • **SMS** - Helping Hungry Homes (HHH) • Donations to Food Banks and organizations that distribute food to the • hungry in the community. • Should carry a HHH sticker/stamp • Include the following in “Short Description”: • name of the food bank or organization • lbs donated • Survey Entry = Incident Report by Sylwia LaBudde

SMS & Other • **SMS** - Community Clean Up • Events should be conducted as part of a sanctioned program or event • (e.g. Adopt-A-Highway, Clean the Bay, part of official sponsorship) • Employee participation • Include the following in “Short Description”: • name of the associated program or event • number of employees and man-hours donated • Survey Entry = Incident Report by Sylwia LaBudde

SMS & Other • **SMS** - World Water Monitoring Challenge (WWMC) • Include the following in “Short Description” : • event location • number of participants involved, as well as • the name of their group (e.g. 25 Wilson Middle School 8th grade students) • Survey Entry = Incident Report by Sylwia LaBudde

  11. SMS & Other • **SMS** - FFA or 4-H Event • Include the following in “Short Description” : • event name or description (e.g. Sampson County FFA Fair) • extent of involvement (e.g. donated money, judged competition) • Survey Entry = Incident Report by Sylwia LaBudde

SMS & Other • **SMS** - Stakeholder Meeting • Speak or present material on Smithfield’s sustainability efforts • Stakeholders include local citizens or government organizations • Attending a town hall meeting without presenting DOES NOT COUNT • Include the following in “Short Description” • groups and/or people present • topics discussed (e.g. overview of Smithfield’s 2012 Sustainability Goals) • Survey Entry = Incident Report by Sylwia LaBudde

SMS & Other • **SMS** - Environmental Project Submitted • Receivingan award or recognition is NOT in this category • If submitting multiple projects, only send out a single incident notification • Include the following in “Short Description” • specify the name of an organization to which projects were submitted • specify the number of projects/applications submitted • Survey Entry = Incident Report by Sylwia LaBudde

SMS & Other • Award, Recognition, or Other Event • This category includes all types of awards and recognitions (e.g. AMI MAPS • Awards, Governor’s Awards) • Include the following in “Short Description” • describe the award or recognition, as well as the reason why it was received • specify the name of an organization presenting the award • These events DO NOT get entered into monthly metric surveys. by Sylwia LaBudde

  15. SMS & Other • **SMS** - Nutrition Assessment • IOC requirement (Corporate personnel generates incident notifications) • Include the following in the “Short Description” • nutritional issues discussed • groups and/or people present • IOCSurvey Entry = IOC Incident Report by Sylwia LaBudde

SMS & Other • **SMS** - Health & Wellness Program • IOC requirement (Corporate personnel generates incident notifications) • Use this category to report Employee Health & Wellness Programs and • Community Health & Wellness Programs • Include the following in the “Short Description” • Name and goal of the program • Program beneficiaries (e.g. employees) • IOC Survey Entry = IOC Incident Report by Sylwia LaBudde

  17. SMS & Other • Non-SMS Event • This category encompasses all other events that are NOTspecifically • listed in previous “incident types”. • Examples include small food donations, money donations to various • groups, volunteer activities, fundraisers, etc. • Consolidate similar events (e.g. multiple non-HHH food donations) • Include the following in “Short Description”: • event description • specify the amount of money, time, product, and/or • volunteer hours by Sylwia LaBudde
