  2. AGAPE = LOVE The Unique Principle at the HEARTof the Way of Christ

  3. AGAPE = LOVE • Defining “LOVE” • Agape = noun; Agapao = verb • “The CHARACTERISTIC word of Christianity” • used to “express ideas previously unknown” - Vine’s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words THUS WE APPROACH THIS KIND OF LOVE AS THE UNIQUE PRINCIPLE OF THE WAY OF CHRIST (distinct from the other “world religions” we are studying this year)

  4. AGAPE = LOVE • Defining “LOVE” • Agape = noun; Agapao = verb • Often defined as “Active or genuine good will” • “LOVE” is concerned with the best interest of the one being loved. (Other Greek words express concepts for which we use the word “love.” – PHILEO and its other forms are used often in the New Testament, and is often closely connected with our study, but we will concentrate on the ideas from AGAPE.)

  5. AGAPE = LOVE • Defining “LOVE” • Agape = noun; Agapao = verb • This “LOVE” is not primarily emotional; rather it is an act of the will. • Thus, it is commanded and this command can be obeyed. • Love involves our emotions, but we can love even when we don’t “feel” like it. This is one of the things that makes agape love unique.

  6. “LOVE” must be learned • I John 4:7-12 • God is love (It is true, however, that “love is God.” God has many essential characteristics, but He is not just a characteristic or an attribute. He is the true and living personal God.) • Love is of God • Love did not originate with us • We learn what love is from God’s love toward us, demonstrated in the gift of His son • The God of the Bible has not asked us to love without having first loved us – Rom. 5:8

  7. “LOVE” must be learned • Just as the Father loved us and sent His Son to die for us, even so the Son acted out of love for the Father and for us in His death upon the cross. • John 14:31 "But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here. • Eph 5:1 ¶ Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. 2 And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.

  8. Our Response: I John 4:19 – “We love Him because He first loved us.” • The first (greatest) commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength – Mark 12:28-30 • The second “like it” is to love your neighbor as yourself – Mark 12:31 • Some think that being “nice” to other people is all that matters. Love of God is FIRST. • Some treat love of others as unimportant, but love of others, based on love for God, is essential – I John 4:20-21

  9. LOVE is active and motivational • John 14:15 - If ye love me, keep my commandments. • John 14:21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me… • John 14:23 If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. • John 15:10 "If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love.

  10. LOVE is active and motivational • 1John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. • Genuine love is obedient to the will of God; one who ignores God’s will does not love God. • John 14:24 "He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me.”

  11. LOVE is active and motivational • Love is behind all true service to God • I Corinthians 13:1-3 • The recipient of an unloving “good deed” may be helped in some way - but it is of no benefit to the “doer.” • Philippians 1:12-18 • People may come to Christ if the true gospel is taught from selfish motives - but the teacher will not please God.

  12. LOVE is active and motivational • LOVE is inseparably tied to the other essential and motivational principles of discipleship, such as faith and hope. • Galatians 5:6 - For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. • As vital as faith and hope are, love is even greater • 1Cor. 13:13 - And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

  13. LOVE identifies disciples • LOVE is one of the identifying traits of a true disciple of Jesus – John 13:34, 35 • LOVE produces disciples of Jesus who think and act like their teacher • Romans 13:9 • Genuine love; without hypocrisy • I Corinthians 13:4-7; Luke 6:31 • Unselfishness service and relationships

  14. LOVE identifies disciples • LOVE is one of the identifying traits of a true disciple of Jesus – John 13:34, 35 • LOVE produces disciples of Jesus who think and act like their teacher • I Peter 1:22 • Pure brotherly love • Matthew 5:43-48; Romans 12:17-21 • Love even of enemies; defer to God’s vengeance

  15. AGAPE = LOVE • Our God has shown us how to love. • He asks us to serve Him from love and to serve those created in His image from the same spirit of love. • The true, personal God of the Bible moves us from a unique perspective: AGAPE = LOVE
