  2. Definition and Function • The Pattern Tool is precisely that, a tool that turns tedious Pro-E drawings into something very simple. • Technically, the Pattern Tool makes parametric copies (called instances) of an existing feature (called the leader).

  3. Use • The pattern tool is very helpful with creating a grating of some kind, for example, one with hundreds of holes. Figure 1 illustrates the use of the pattern tool to make the holes in the part. Figure 1. Pattern Tool

  4. Types of Patterns • Dimension Pattern • Fill Pattern • Axis Pattern • Direction Pattern

  5. The Dimension Pattern • The Dimension Pattern is useful when we want to replicate cuts or modifications by selecting dimensions. • Usually, it is in a straight line or throughout a part. • Replicates can also be done along a diagonal. Figure 2. Dimension Pattern Figure 3. Diagonal

  6. The Fill Pattern • The Fill Pattern is very useful for creating grates and numerous cuts covering a specified sketching surface. • Figure 3 shows that the pattern was done on the selected surface. Figure 4. Fill Pattern

  7. The Direction Pattern • The Direction Pattern can be used when we want to replicate numerous cuts or shafts. • It is done by selecting a direction, such as an edge or datum, in which the pattern will be done. Figure 5. Direction Pattern

  8. The Axis Pattern • The Axis Pattern is very useful for creating features such as the teeth on a gear. • The pattern is created by sketching a feature in reference to an axis. You select the desired angle of rotation, and the number of replicas you want to place in the figure. Figure 6. Axis Pattern

Standard Conventions • “Commonly accepted practices, rules, or methods.” • In technical drawings, a standard convention is the use of dashed lines to designate a feature hidden from the current view point. • Standards allow for the clear communication of technical ideas. In the United States, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) is the governing body that sets the standards used for engineering and technical drawings. • Other professional organizations such as the American Society for Mechanical Engineering (ASM) assist ANSI in developing technical graphics standards.

Standard Conventions - Partial Views • Partial views show only what is necessary to completely describe the object. • These are used to eliminate excessive hidden lines that would make reading and visualizing a drawing difficult. It is created along a center line or a break line. Figure 7. Partial Views

  11. Standard Conventions - Revolution Conventions • These are used to simplify the representation of ribs and webs. • Used in objects with bolt circles to eliminate hidden lines and improve visualization. • Used to simplify the representation of arms Figure 8. Ribs Figure 9. Ribs

Standard Conventions - Aligned Sections • Special types of orthographic drawings used to revolve or align special features of parts to make them easier to represent. • Aligned sections are used to rotate holes into position along the vertical center line. • Aligning Ribs in section views is the conventional method of representation.   13. Conclusion • The pattern tool is a very helpful tool to simplify tedious work. • It is very easy to use the tool. • Standard conventions allow for clear communication of technical ideas.
