  1. SAR Stories Leadership Skills, Flexibility, and Teamwork Skills

  2. Leadership Skills

  3. Situation In my time at Edible Arrangements, I wasn’t just an owner, I took on a very active manager role. There is one particular story that sticks out in my mind, it was Dec 23rd, which is our single busiest day of the year as we are preparing all our arrangements for Christmas Day. It was about 6PM, an hour before we closed up shop and we had all be in the store since 5am that morning. Everyone was exhausted and we were finishing our last couple orders, when one of my regular customers calls me up with an order for 25 arrangements for the following day.

  4. Action I knew my team was as tired as I was if not more so, but I also knew I could not turn down this order. I knew it wasn’t right to ask my employees to stay any longer than they already had, so I told them they could leave if they wanted too, but that I would appreciate the help. When no one left, I assigned each person a job and vacated my post at the store front to take on production role with the others.

  5. Result After getting a little energy boost from the pizza, we buckled down and produced all 25 arrangements in 3 hours, leaving the store only 2hours after close, and satisfying my customer.

  6. Flexibility

  7. Situation I find myself to be a fairly structured person, I like a plan and to know when things are going to happen, so that I may be prepared to the best of my ability. When I started my program at Humber, I gained myself an internship with BMO's event based marketing team which would have me working different events and learning from the team. One of the biggest things I learned from this internship was my ability to be flexible and to go with the flow rather than rely on a strict schedule. It was 12 noon and I was sitting in class when I received an email. There was an event that night that desperately needed some extra hands and they were hoping I could come in and help at 4pm that after no one. Not problem, I was excited to get in there and get my hands dirty. Only problem was this last minute decision found me in rather inappropriate clothes for a corporate situation…

  8. Action So thinking on my feet I contacted a friend who lived in the city and when class let out at 2pm, I rushed over and borrowed a nice skirt and jacket from her along with a pair of heels and was ready to go at the event site by 330pm.

  9. Result By being flexible and making it to the event 30 minute's early, I was able to help with a serious issue that had come up a mere hour before the guests were to arrive. I helped to alphabetize, organize, and get all the name tags, and table numbers in their rightful place so that everyone knew where they were going.

  10. Teamwork Skills

  11. Situation There are many instances in my education and job experiences where I have had to work as part of a team. One particular instance where my abilities to work as a team shine was in my job at the Bank of Montreal in Guelph. We were a very busy branch, located in a mall and for that reason we were chosen to be the trial branch for a new cash system that would help to eliminate mistakes and loss of cash, but could also reduce funds lost incase of a robbery. While the machine had many benefits, it also proved to have a significantly more complicated balancing procedure, which was the responsibility of myself and my night shift teammates.

  12. Action After multiple nights, of being there hours after close struggling to balance and close out the machine we decided to make the process easier by each mastering one part of the process. Derrick would collect the paperwork from the actually team, while Jesse would get the safe open and continue to serve and last minute clients, and I would be responsible for counting the cash and making sure it all matched the paperwork Derrick collected.

  13. Result After a few more rough nights we managed to master our roles and got to the point where, as a team, we were able to count, compare and close down the CDU in 15 minutes or less, most nights having the branch closed up within 10 minutes of locking our doors.
