Geography, Climate, and Natural Resources • As the 2nd largest country in Europe, France is a little smaller than Texas. • Two thirds of France is mountains and hills, with the Alps, Pyrenees, Mastif Central, and Vosges ranges. • Mont Blanc in the Alps is the highest mountain in Europe. • France is famous for its rivers; the Seine, the Rhone, and the Rhine • The Mediterranean coast includes the popular tourist area, the French Riviera. Its hot, dry summers and mild winters make it a popular beach area. • Major cities and population: • Paris, the capital - 8.7 million people • Lyon - 1.2 million people • Marseille - 1.2 million people • Lille - 950,000 people • Bordeaux - 640,000 people

  3. Geography, climate, and natural resources • Climate: France is located mid-way between the equator and the North Pole. This gives France a temperate climate. Most areas do not get extremely hot or cold. Along the Mediterranean coast, the warm Gulf Stream current provides for mild winters and hot, dry summers. Mountain areas tend to be colder, with considerable rain and snow. • Natural resources include bauxite, uranium and high-quality soils that cover almost half the country's surface, giving France an agricultural surplus that makes it an exporter of food. The diverse geography of France allows the French to farm, fish, and mine. France is the largest exporter of agricultural goods in the European Union (EU). The French love to spend leisure time outdoors; the warm climate of the French Riviera allows the people to enjoy the beaches for swimming and fishing, while the Alps provide snow for cold weather sports. The changing landscape provides great spots for hiking , climbing, and horseback riding . The wet Northwest provides lots of rain for growing crops. France remains a significant producer of uranium, a fuel used in nuclear reactors, and bauxite, from which aluminum is made.

  4. Economic Data • Historically, agriculture was one of France's major industries and France continues to be the leading producer of wine. • Today the economy is much more industrialized. France has become a world leader in technology. The manufacturing industry produces cars, aerospace products, and other manufactured goods. It is also a major producer of chemical products. Fashion, textiles and tourism also play a significant role in the French economy. France is a developed country, with a strong social structure and a high standard of life. The upper class, or aristocracy, still live in the grand homes of their ancestors. The middle class or bourgeoisie, is the largest and most influential group. They make up 40 percent of the labor force. Most professionals belong to the middle class. The farmers and manual workers make up the working class. They have a high standard of living with more than 60 percent living in houses and many French people own more than one house.

Culture • France has been a major influence on culture and art throughout the world. • The French have played an important role in cinema, fashion and cuisine. • Food and wine are two of the great passions of the French, they also love fresh bread, and cheese • Sunday brunch is the biggest meal of the day when the entire family gathers for a multi-course meal. • Friends and family may greet each other by lightly kissing on the cheeks, once on the left cheek and once on the right cheek. • First names are reserved for family and close friends, they usually wait until invited before using someone's first name. • 80 percent of the population is Christian with Islam as the second largest and One percent of the population is Jewish. • French is the official language of France The French way of life, is a unique culture to be admired. They put a lot of emphasis on nutrition, adequate mealtimes and devotion to family time. In France, lunch is considered the most important meal of the day. Students can get lunch at school or go home for it. Lunch is one to two hours long. French students are taught to take time to savor and enjoy their meals. Paris is the fashion capital of the world. The French take great pride in dressing as nice as their budget allows.

  8. Current events • US Secretary of State John Kerry met with French President François Hollande and Foreign Minister Laurent Fabiusin Paris. Their talks focused on the crisis in Mali and increasing support for the Syrian opposition. Our secretary of state, John Kerry, and France’s president, François Hollande, are in a crisis. They are working together to try and take down President Bashar al-Assad, of Syria. The US and France are trying their best to keep this issue from going global.
