  24. VA DECA’s Accomplishmentsfor 2009-2010 • There are 248 Marketing Education programs in 88 school divisions • 13,704 affiliated with DECA; a 561 – member decrease over last year • 201 chapters • 13,055 students • 376 advisors • 175 professionals • 98 alumni

  25. VA DECA’s Accomplishmentsfor 2009-2010 • VA DECA continues to be the largest state association surpassing other states by over 2, 500 members. (Wisconsin is still 2nd). • Robinson Secondary DECA (Fairfax Co.) is the largest DECA chapter in the state with 447 members • Cosby High School (Chesterfield Co.) is the second largest DECA chapter in the state with 344 members

  26. VA DECA’s Accomplishments for 2009-2010 Chapters reported: • $33,173 donated to state charities • 22,265 hours of community service • 7,075 pounds of food collected for the “Stop Hunger in VA” campaign

VA DECA’s Accomplishments for 2009-2010 State Leadership Conference • 2, 268 in attendance • 1,977 students • 8 State Officers • 100 Leadership Academy Participants • 1877 Competitors • 291 Advisors and Chaperones These numbers represent 30 Districts and 145 Chapters (11 of these were re-activated chapters)

VA DECA’s Accomplishments for 2009-2010 State Leadership Conference • 90 chapters increased their membership by 10% or had 100% membership • 36 competitive events were offered • Top 8 in each Series event and TDM moved on to ICDC • Top 7 in each Written Event moved on to ICDC • 15 School-Based Enterprises Certified Nationally

VA DECA’s Accomplishmentsfor 2009-2010 ICDC, Louisville, KY • 668 in attendance (74 Chapters were represented) • 553 students • 424 competed • 31 – School Based Enterprise • 29 – Leadership Academy • 28 – Senior Management Institute • 25 – Voting Delegates • 12 – Chapter Management Academy • 4 – LEADS, the State Officer Academy • 115 Adults (96 Advisors, 16 Chaperones, 3 Judges)

VA DECA’s Accomplishmentsfor 2009-2010ICDC, Louisville, KY • 208 Virginians walked across the stage • 16 students – top ten in role play • 51 students – finalists after preliminary round • 44 students in top 10 internationally • 2 students placed 3rd internationally • 5 students placed 1st internationally

What’s New?….. • The NEW Workplace Readiness Skills for the Commonwealth are incorporated into every CTE course. • The first 21 tasks in each task list reflect these soft skills, which are required instruction. (Increased from 13 in previous years) • Associated with each WRS are teaching ideas and instructional resources. Just click on the competency number and another screen will open. • These are followed by eight tasks addressing All Aspects of Industry, one on Internet safety, and three on CTE student organizations. • http://cteresource.org/verso2/framework/tasklist/marketing/marketing/2010/8120

  33. SchoolTool: Can Do Competency Tracking Software • Enables teachers to track state-mandated competencies • Allow students to check their progress in real-time • Accessible from any computer with an internet connection and web browser and is optimized for use with Firefox.

SchoolTool: CanDo Competency Tracking Software • Training sessions are taking place August 12 at the CTE Resource Center in Richmond for school division CTE admins/CanDo site coordinators. • If a school division cannot attend, assistance is available through Glenda Lewis for other training options. • Information on CanDo hardware and software requirements is readily available on the CTE Resource web site at http://www.cteresource.org

  35. 9th Grade Freshman 2011-12 Requirements • Required to take an economics/personal finance course for graduation • Marketing teachers are endorsed to teach the Finance 6120 course that meets all the regulations for Personal Finance and Economics • Marketing teachers are now endorsed to teach the Economics course under History and Social Science program area (Economics 2800)

Revisions to the Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia8 VAC 20-131-140: College and career preparation programs and opportunities for postsecondary credit. Academic and Career Plan Beginning with the 2011-2012 academic year, all schools shall begin development of a personal Academic and Career Plan for each seventh-grade student with completion by the fall of the student’s eighth-grade year.

  42. Academic and Career Plan Shall include, but not be limited to: • The student’s program of study for high school graduation that is aligned with a postsecondary career pathway and/or college entrance; • Postsecondary career pathway based on student’s academic and career interests;

  43. Academic and Career Plan • Shall be signed by the student, student’s parent or guardian, and school official(s) designated by the principal; • The school shall have met its obligation for parental involvement if it makes a good faith effort to notify the parent or guardian of the responsibility for the development and approval of the Plan; • Shall be included in the student’s record; and • Shall be reviewed and updated, if necessary, before the student enters the ninth and eleventh grades.
