  1. ScienceScape2013 By: Kelsey (13), Jackson (14), Jada (14), and Steven (13) (8th graders)

  2. Mineral Structures • Looked at crystals under a microscope to see crystal shapes/structures (ex: monoclinic, isometric, hexagonal, etc.) • Observed sand and rock samples under a microscope to look at crystal structure in them • Analyzed mineral samples and tried to identify their crystal structure

  3. Results of Mineral Structures • Found that minerals each have a specific crystal structure • A crystal structure is the pattern the atoms make when they arrange themselves within the mineral • Minerals break into certain shapes based on their crystal structure • Learned to recognize crystal structure in minerals

  4. Rock Candy • Coated popsicle sticks in sugar crystals • Filled jar with super-saturated sugar water • Super-Saturated – when is a solution is more highly concentrated than normally possible at the present state • Put stick in sugar water and waited for crystals to grow!!!!

  5. Rock Candy Results • Rock Candy crystalized on the stick!!! • The original sugar crystals acted like seeds

  6. Sunday Evening Icebreakers • “Pictionary” game • Getting to Know You Beach Ball • Door Signs

  7. Final Thoughts • Kelsey – Camp was a great experience. I learned a lot in a super cool lab setting. • Jackson – I had a great time and want to come back next year! • Jada – I had a good time and camp was interesting!! • Steven – I learned a lot at camp and I hope I get to come back next year!

  8. Acknowledgements We would like to thank our parents, the counselors, the supervisor, and most of all the instructors for teaching us so much. We learned about crystals, cells, DNA, proteins, and the electromagnetic spectrum in a super fun lab setting that we would never experience in any other summer camp. We are so happy to have gone to this camp! 
