  1. Understand how media products are constructed for specific audiences

  2. Selection • When researching and gathering data you need to be able to select the best parts. • The news for example will get loads of stories which will need to be looked at to select the best stories but also the ones that are true.

  3. Composition • composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art or a photograph, as distinct from the subject of a work. It can also be thought of as the organization of the elements of art. • Such examples can be from magazines on where to put articles. Film could be how to compose a shot and where the actors would stand. Or which shots should go where.

  4. Combination • This is important as the media combines different elements together. In the news it usually starts with the biggest story and ends with the news. • Can you think of any media that has certain combinations

  5. Mode of address - Content • Mode of address means how a media product communicates with the audience. • The content would be understand of what is on show in the media product and how that would communicate to the audience.

  6. Mode of address - Images • The imagery in a media product helps the audience understand what audience it is mainly for. • The imagery will give the audience uses and gratifications

  7. Mode of address - language • The type of language that is used in a media text can tell audiences different things. • Formal or informal • Level • Tone • Accent

  8. Genre • is the term for any category of entertainment. • Genres are formed by conventions • Such examples would be the horror genre. How would you know you were watching one?

  9. Constraints • Legal restrictions such as copywrite which means you can not copy someone else's work without asking permission. Such laws are in place for music. • Codes and practice BBFC - funded by the film industry and responsible for the national classification and censorship of films within the United Kingdom have the power to decide under what circumstances films are shown in cinema
