  3. A Tour of the Bureau • The Washington Bureau (TWB) is located conveniently two blocks from the Capitol at 400 N. Capitol Street. A view of the Capitol from the roof of our building. A view of the entrance to the capitol; taken during one of our shots in the capitol.

  4. A Tour of the Bureau • Studios • TWB headquarters contains two studios where guests can be taped, or footage of the guest can be sent live to satellite locations, so that programming can be aired as it is acquired. Small studio Large studio

A Tour of the Bureau • Control room • All shots are routed through TWB’s control room, weather in studio or remote; taped or live. • The control room is used to monitor and change levels and settings so that the best audio and video quality is maintained.   6. A Tour of the Bureau • TRINITY edit room • TWB uses an editing system known as TRINITY to digitally edit footage after it has been shot. • Some clients ask that we edit the footage we shoot, while some request all footage un-edited. Editing on the TRINITY edit machine

  7. A Tour of the Bureau • Storage/ Supply room • TWB houses all of the gear used to shoot footage outside of the studio in the supply room. • “Gear” includes the following, and then some. • Microphones • Cables • Cameras • Lighting Equipment • Tripods • Batteries • Audio mixers

  8. A Tour of the Bureau • Remote locations • TWB owns lines in multiple places on and around Capitol Hill. This enables us to plug in at a satellite location and broadcast to virtually anywhere. • Some remote locations include: • 4 different locations in the Capitol itself • Rooftop of our building • Rayburn and Cannon Senate buildings One location inside the Capitol

  11. Staff • Producer/ Intern Coordinator • Melissa Thompson • Responsibilities • Oversee/ assign intern responsibilities • See each project through from start to finish • Develop contacts with client to keep them using our bureau for business

  12. My Responsibilities • Help with administrative paperwork and research for stories • Assist at shoots, both in house and remote • Conduct interviews • Help edit tape • Help repair equipment

  13. Interesting Assignments • Taped two guests for FOX’s O’Reilly Factor • Taped Senator Sarbanes and fed the shot live to CNBC • Taped several congressmen’s reactions to The State of the Union address in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall • Taped an interview with Representative Dingell of Michigan • Shot footage of a new exhibit at Arlington National Cemetery for HD Net • Covered Washington’s annual Cherry Blossom Festival for HD Net Behind the camera! Representative Dingell and I

My Project • Covering the Washington Nationals’ Home Opener at RFK Stadium on Thursday, April 14. * • Securing press credentials for two camera crews • Pitching the idea to my bureau chief after all the preliminary arrangements had been made • Writing the story • Reporting the story • Editing the footage into a package *footage and pictures of the event will be available after it takes place on Thursday, April 14.

  15. Skills Learned • How to shoot and edit tape • Adjustment of audio levels using a mixer • Adjustment of video levels, including conducting a white balance • How to set up a live shot • Lighting procedures • How to set up a studio shot • Setting up a microphone on a guest • How to call a host to verify continuity • How to interview guests • How to network in the broadcasting industry
