  4. A change in power… • In 1832, Santa Anna overthrew the Mexican government and became the new president of Mexico • This excited the Texas colonists as they were led to believe that Santa Anna was in favor of states rights • However, the colonists would soon learn that this was not the case.

  5. Convention of 1832 • After the convention of 1832 SFA went to Mexico City to deliver the colonists requests • While in Mexico City, a couple of things happened: • SFA is forced to wait to have his voice heard by the Mexican Government • Colonists drafted a constitution at the Convention of 1833 calling for the independent Mexican-state of Texas • SFA writes a letter telling colonists to create a new government for the independent Mexican State of Texas.

  6. SFA Arrested • Eventually SFA met with Santa Anna and Santa Anna agreed to make changes: • Let Americans come back to Texas • Fairer taxes on goods from U.S. • However Santa Anna rejected the idea of the independent state of Texas • Shortly after leaving Mexico City, SFA was stopped by Mexican police • The police had intercepted SFA’s letter to the colonists • SFA was charged with treason and spent the next year in a Mexican jail

  7. Ticket Out the Door 3 reasons why the colonists should be upset with the Mexican government 2 reasons why the Mexican government should be upset with the Texas Colonists 1 reason the arrest of SFA is significant
