  3. Components • Three (3) points • Eight (8) sentences • One (1) paragraph

  4. Terms to Know… • Topic Sentence: states the main point directly • RFD (contain transitional words) • Reason • Fact • Detail • “E” Statement • Example • Explaining • Evidence • Elaborate

  5. The Eight Sentences… • Topic Sentence • RFD about the Topic #1 • “E” statement to support the RFD • RFD about the Topic #2 • “E” statement #2 • RFD about the Topic #3 • “E” statement #3 • Closing sentence wrapping up the idea.

  6. Topic Sentence… • It unifies the content • A topic sentence is always… • a complete sentence • expresses an idea about a limited topic. • It is not a title • What football means to me • It is not an explanation of the writer's plan • I am going to tell you about the role football played in my education.

Steps to Creating a TOPIC SENTENCE… • What’s your topic? • Your main idea • (ie) Sports Cars • What is your supporting idea? • Elaborate • Consider a specific aspect • (ie) Care and Maintenance • Write your sentence • (ie) Sports cars require specific care and precise maintenance in order to keep them running well.

  9. RFDs • Reason • Fact • Detail • About your topic • ONLY choose one for the sentence • MUST contain a transitional word or phrase

  13. Practice… • Now add a sentence that contains an “E” statement and supports your first RFD. • Example • Elaborate • Explaining • Evidence

  17. Practice… • Write another RFD sentence and then write an“E” Statements. • RFD • Reason, Fact, OR Detail • “E” Statement • Evidence, Elaborates, Example, Explains • DON’T forget they’re linked together.

  18. Concluding Sentence • A sentence at the end of the paragraph which summarizes the information that has been presented.  • You can think of a concluding sentence as a sort of topic sentence in reverse.

  19. Practice… • Write a concluding sentence about your topic, which summarizes your 3 RFDs and “E” Statements.
