  3. About me I am Dr. M.Balasubramanian, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Anna University, University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram, Tamilnadu, India. Anna University - University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  4. BALASUBRAMANIAN M Shape function Finite Element Analysis Mechanical III year UG students in Mechanical Engineering ANNA UNIVERSITY-Chennai, Tamilnadu Anna University - University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  5. Out-of-class Activity Design-1 Learning Objective(s) of Out-of-Class Activity • Discuss the shape function for linear element in Finite Element Analysis • Discuss the shape function for quadratic element in Finite Element Analysis • Study the characteristics of shape function Key Concept(s) to be covered Element type Shape function Nodal function Anna University - University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  8. Out-of-class Activity Design - 3 Aligning Assessment with Learning Objective Anna University - University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  9. Out-of-class Activity Design - 3 Aligning Assessment with Learning Objective TOTAL DURATION 28.00 min Anna University - University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  10. In-class Activity Design -1 Learning Objective(s) of In - Class Activity Analysis the shape function characteristics in two noded element by linear function Shape function characteristics in two noded element with quadratic function Estimate the shape function values and Starting node point, mid point and end node point Key Concept(s) to be covered The sum of shape function at each node point The curve of shape in linear and quadratic method The shape function value at intersecting point Anna University - University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  11. In-class Activity Design -2 Active Learning activity(ies) that you plan to do Discuss shape function for different noded element using Think pair share activity Explained characterization of shape function at different node point in linear and quadratic method Explain the strategy by giving details of The sum of shape function unity for any noded element The shape function in its own node has one and other node point is zero. The mid point of node is half of the value for linear. Justify why the above is an active learning strategy The linear shape function equation is simplicity to solve the all kind noded element The linear function used to model complicated structure within short period Anna University - University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  12. In-Class Activity – Design Active Learning activities planned to do Tutorial Problem solving using . • Think-Pair-Share Concept clarification using. • Peer Instruction University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  13. In-Class Activity – Design PI Peer Instruction Strategy – What Teacher Does Pose the two PI questions at the start of the class. Q 1: Find the shape function value of own nodal element ? 0 1 Can’t say .  Q 2: Find the shape function value of mid nodal element 0.5 unity zeros University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  14. In-Class Activity – Design PI • Peer Instruction Strategy – What Student Does • For each question they will first vote individually using FLASH CARDS. • Then they will discuss with peers and come to consensus. • Listen to instructors explanation and clarify their answers whether their thinking is right/wrong and a detailed explanation given by the instructor for every students’ wrong answers. University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  15. In-Class Activity – Design TPS TPS Strategy – What Instructor does • Explain how to formulate the shape function of four nodal element • A question is given to all the students in the class to think out the answer for it. • Question: What is the governing equations of linear element ? University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  16. In-Class Activity – Design 2 TPS Strategy – What Instructor does Think (~2 minutes) • Instruction: The summation of shape function value unity for all kind of all nodal elements • Think individually and identify the characteristics of shape function University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  17. In-Class Activity – Design 2 TPS Strategy – What Instructor does Pair (~5 minutes) • Instruction: Now pair up the students and compare their answers. Pair students agree on one final answer. • While students are pairing and discussing, instructor goes to 2~3 pairs to see what they are doing. University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  18. In-Class Activity – Design 2 TPS Strategy – What Instructor does Share (~5 minutes) • Instructor asks a group to share their answer with class and see whether there are different answers. After sharing is done, instructor gives feedback on the correct solution . • In the next iteration of TPS, in the Think Phase the instructor asks the students to explain the quadratic and interpolation function of three noded linear element • In the pair phase the instructor asks the students to compare the answers. • In the share phase some volunteer students are asked to tell their answers before all in class and the instructor explains how to express governing equation of eight nodal element . University College of Engineering Ramanathapuram

  19. In-class Activity Design -2 Justify why the above is an active learning strategy • Based on the students feedback it comes to know that they can able to understanding the shape function characteristics of two ,three, four and eight noded elements. • Through peer discussion students clarified their doubts .
