  1. Computational Thought and Physics Adam Lewis GST 400-C Spring 2006

  2. Outline • The Turing Test • Consciousness • Quantum Mechanics and Microtubules

  3. The Turing Test • Not valid • “Imitation, no matter how skillful, ought always to be detectable by skillful enough probing (Penrose, 10)” • There must be mathematical proof that the machine is conscious

  4. Consciousness • Cannot be currently explain by physics and mathematics • Quantum theory may need to altered to help produce a unified theory

  5. Quantum Mechanics • Electrons simultaneously exist in different states • Quantum behavior exists when subatomic particles are isolated (this is a problem!)

  6. The Solution: Microtubules? • Microtubules are thin hollow tubes of protein within cells • These may allow for insulation of an electron from the surrounding brain matter

  7. Sources • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microtubule • http://ase.tufts.edu/cogstud/papers/penrose.htm • Freedman, David H. “Quantum Consciousness.” Discover June 1994. • Penrose, Roger. The Emperor’s New Mind. Oxford University Press: New York. 1989.
