MahindaChinthana has given clear directions for Sri Lanka to become the Aviation Hub in Asia Sri Lanka is well placed strategically to become the center of aviation in the region in all areas of aviation related activity Not only as a passenger hub, but also for aircraft maintenance, manufacture of components, aviation training, cargo transshipment and as a sea-air hub at Hambantota

  3. Sri Lanka has an excellent track record in airline safety and security. Independent audit by ICAO placed Sri Lanka 1stin South-Asia (SAARC) 4th in Asia-Pacific (out of 34 countries after South Korea, Singapore and Japan) for degree of compliance with international standards locally

  4. Sri Lanka is already on it’s way towards becoming a Hub We passed the 50,000 aircraft movements per annum mark for the first time in 2013 Passenger movements increased to 7.3 million in 2013 Air cargo handling increased by 9% in 2013

  6. 1. Development of Airports • MattalaRajapaksa International  Airport • Phase I - 1 million pax per annum • Phase II – 5 million pax per annum • Alternate International Airport • Can handle the largest aircraft • Strategically situated

  7. Bandaranaike International Airport • Current capacity 6 Mn. Pax per annum • (BIA handled 7.3 Mn.passengers in 2013) • Phase II Stage 2 commencing 2014 • Total handling capacity 15 Million. pax per annum • In the interim, existing terminal expansion in 2014 to cater to excess passenger capacity

  8. Domestic airport development • Already developed • Ratmalana – Colombo Airport • Ampara, Iranamadu, Anuradhapura, China Bay • In the process • Batticaloa, Palavi and Kandy • Free Zone at MRIA gazzeted • BOI approved investments • Hotels, Shopping malls, Entertainment parks

  9. Sea – Air HUB at Hambantota • Connecting Magampura Port & MRIA • Cargo Transhipment • Leisure activity – cruise liners • Fuel bunkering • Logistic support for the port

  10. 2. Strengthening of National • Airlines • Competitive modern fleet • Replacement of A340’s with A350’s & A330’s • commencing in October 2014 • Fleet Expansion

  11. Cabin modernization • Becoming competitive in Business Class segment • Part of the wide body fleet already upgraded

  12. 3. Improvement of International Aviation Affairs Entering into new Bilateral Agreements and revising existing agreements 2013 - new agreements signed with Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Spain, N Zealand, Ethiopia & Finland 2013 - agreements revised with Seychelles, India, Greece & S. Korea

  13. 4. Improvement of Passenger Services Self Check - in counters operated by SriLankan airlines at BIA Streamlining taxi service 600 permits issued to taxi operators at BIA Silk route facility Passengers travelling an all classes can access on payment of a nominal fee

Optimization of Airspace • Utilization of the existing capacity to maximum • Modernize the navigation systems • 2013 upgraded HF communication systems to cover entire FIR • ADS-B (Automatic Dependence Surveillance – • Broadcast) • ready by early 2015 • PBN (Performance Based Navigation) • to be Implemented in 2015 • Global Navigation Satelite System

  15. Domestic Passenger Air Transportation • Liberalized policy introduced to encourage domestic carriers with private sector participation • Amphibian air transport encouraged

Aviation Related Activities • MRO • (maintenance, Repair, Overhaul) • Infrastructure now being built in MRIA • Airline catering • Done by SriLankan catering at BIA and MRIA • Promoting local produce • Most of food items for airlines now purchased locally • MRIA will cater to quick dispatch of perishable items

Training & Research Facilities • SriLankan Airlines training courses at BIA • Technical training • Advance flight training – type rating • (includes foreign pilot training) • Service training • International Aviation Academy • (IATA accredited courses) • Integrationof all training to form the Advanced Aviation Academy at Mattala is planned over the next two years

Sri Lanka Air Force Performs Helicopter Underwater Egress Training (HUET) for all civilians who wish to do off shore operations Training of staff in civilian carriers in first aid and Aviation Medicine related subjects Plays a major role in domestic civilian flight operations and in construction of domestic airports

  19. Areas needing priority Close collaboration between the Hubs More investments in relation to the airports and especially the Mattala free zone Development of good links between the tour operators, airlines and tourist industry in general National airlines to be strengthened Cargo trans-shipment to be enhanced Expansion of aviation related training and research
