  3. Lab Alert • LabAlert provides timely emergency alerts to the lab community via text message on your cell phone. • Sign up at Lab Alert under A-Z index • Lab phones are automatically signed up. • Log in to add your personal cell phone.

  4. Drop, Cover, Hold Drill Earthquake drill scheduled for Oct 16, 10:16am to coordinate with statewide earthquake drill. • Review: BET responsibilities during an evacuation. • Roll out of Limited Mobility Evacuation Procedures (next slide).

Limited Mobility Evacuation • DO NOT use elevator. • If individual cannot use stairs: • Same procedures for injured individual. • Individual stays in place & waits for BET to conduct sweep. • BET notes location of individual and reports status to Lead or first responders. • If BET does not appear within 10 minutes, individual can call 911. • If individual can use stairs with assistance: • Indentify buddies to assist individual during evacuation. Can be done in advance.

Protective Actions • EHS 135 All Hazards Awareness: will become required training for all Lab employees and include the following protective actions. • Building Evacuation • Shelter-In-Place • Lockdown • “Building Emergency Teams will assist building occupants with the implementation of protective actions.”

  10. Protective Actions Evacuation - used to move personnel from a hazardous condition to a safe location (i.e., assembly area) during a fire, potential landslide, or after an earthquake. Shelter-in-Place - used to minimize threatened personnel’s exposure to dangerous hazardous materials (biological, chemical or radiological), wildlife, severe weather. • Lockdown - used when there is an immediate threat involving an active shooter, dangerous intruders or other incidents that may result in harm to persons inside or outside the Laboratory’s building(s).

Shelter-In-Place • Stop work. • Attempt to secure materials, if it can be done swiftly and safely. • Go inside immediately, or stay inside. • If time permits, move to the nearest available shelter area immediately. • Move away from doors and windows. • Remain at the shelter area until given the “All Clear” or are otherwise directed by emergency response personnel. • Implement personnel accountability if directed to do so. • Close as many interior doors and windows as possible as you move into the inner most areas of the building or structure. (The intent is to place as many barriers as possible between you and the outdoor environment.) • Turn off air conditioning, heating, and air handling units that draw in outside air. Close vents if possible.

Shelter-In-Place • Take advance measures to reduce infiltration (i.e., placing plastic sheeting over windows and vents, applying tape over electrical outlets, around doors, and other openings to reduce the air flow as much as possible). • Personnel in vehicles should roll up the windows and close vents that draw in outside air, including heaters and air conditioners, then drive to a safe area that is upwind from the event. • Maximize your safety by minimizing movement within the site. • If personnel attempt to enter your building while you are sheltering, allow them to enter the building or shelter area. However, potentially contaminated personnel must remain segregated to reduce the likelihood of cross-contamination to others in the shelter area.

Lockdown • Stop work. • If possible, all staff, affiliates, and visitors must IMMEDIATELY proceed out of the line of sight of windows and doorways to the nearest room or secure space. • NOTE: It is imperative to find cover or concealment away from doors and windows as quickly as possible. • All doors should be locked, and if there is no lock, construct barricades with available objects. • Turn off all lights and electrical devices. • Silence cell phones (including vibrate mode), but leave power on so notification updates can be received. • All window shades or blinds should be closed. • If gunshots or explosives are heard, remain concealed and get positioned as close to the floor as possible. • Remain at the shelter area until given the “All Clear” or are otherwise directed by emergency response personnel.
